Hi guys...

I've just bought this hofner congress from a friend...

Pics here

Please could anyone tell me anything about this guitar, year ? et cetera...

It's marked inside 'congress' '12491'

May I ask how to clean it?

Should I attempt to clean the metal with anything?
Also on the reverse neck..it has a build up from where previous players have had their thumb...mainly on reverse from frets f to b. 1 to 7.

The tone on this is beautiful.

I am a amateur guitar player.

Thank you and good health to all.

Darren

The tailpiece may benefit from some metal polish like Autosol or Brasso, and the body from a gentle nitro-friendly cleaner/polish (I currently use some fender Custom Shop stuff). You might want to scrape between the frets to get rid of some crud - I use a Stanley knife blade but some people may prefer something gentler like an old credit card. Then tape off the board with masking tape and polish the frets with fine steel wool or micromesh, and give the board a once-over with some oil or fretboard conditioner. Here's one I did, an early 60s flamenco guitar that had been a bit neglected.

Nice. It's a 1963 according to this site:

Try some lighter fluid on a hidden part of the finish, if there is no finish reaction then use it to clean the rest of the guitar. It's a great degreaser and gets that black fingerboard gunk off brilliantly.
