  • 1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?
A crappy no-name "Stevenson and Brown" Chinese Strat knock-off. What a bad decision. 15th birthday.

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?
I've got a Music Man JP13 (impulse buy, for sale now). It's just a lot of dough.

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?
Said cheap Strat copy, soon 15 years old.

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?
    Probably a Kemper

5: What strings do you use?
Ernie Ball 2240 Slinky RPS 10 Gauge

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?
    Practice more beforehand.

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?
Making sure I'm all warmed up, doing some deep breaths to calm down.

    8: ...And five minutes after?
Obsessing over every little mistake I made.

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
The cheap strat copy went completely out of tune in the middle of a song.

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?
Cut down on watching all those DVDs and Youtube Lessons, get more time on the instrument. Also, don't buy that cheap shitty guitar. Get a decent Squier for the same price.

1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?
The first bought and paid for was a Les Paul Traditional, in 2014

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save? Ha. Soo far ahead of you and a 58 CS Les Paul, plus 594, one over each shoulder, both in mono sleaves and ready to go

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own? No oldies, though that would be a lovely thing

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire? Likely the Sim1 xt-1. Single coil and accoustic (and more), and all in a single pedal. Wow

5: What strings do you use? NYXL 10’s

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be? Zip ambition to record anything. At any time. Ever

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage? As in work, you will never find me on stage, ever, ever, again. And that pleases me enormously

8: ...And five minutes after? Enjoying the sense of elation, when it went well. That and a pint

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage? Choked. Other than that, sweats, klammy hands, cotton mouth. You know, the usual

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar? Start earlier. Though that said, taking it up was something only ever for myself. Something that is a complete stretch, wholly alien to anything Ive experienced before, is the greater reward and its probably not something Id have appreciated as much, then.

1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?

Ibanez 540 Radius in Jewel Blue purchased from Axemail (Colchester) in 1988 (I had it a couple of weeks and handed it back in exchange for a Korg M1 due to my Brother kept on "borrowing it" worst & most costly mistake ever!)

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?

I only have two guitars, my Strandberg Boden would be saved, my Fender Deluxe Strat would burn!

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?

My Fender Dleuxe HSS strat, although its only 6 months old, my Strandberg is only 3 weeks old.

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?

Fractal Audio AxeFX III - which won't happen as I don't have money to burn.

5: What strings do you use?

    D'Addario NYXL 10-46

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?

The overall mix and production, my skills in that department are not good.

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?

I've never played live or gigged but I would imagine I'd be warming up my left hand (and no not that!)

    8: ...And five minutes after?

Coming down to earth after playing live in front of 80,000 people and being a total success ...... NOT!

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?

I nearly wet myself, but that was being on stage at primary school whilst playing the part of a wiseman in the nativity, not very wise nearly pissing yourself

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?

Always use a point of rhythmic reference when practicing, nothing worse than playing out of time with bad intonation and its not all about speed, more important aspects of playing is timing, phrasing, bending intonation and knowing your way around the fretboard which I'm sure would go in and out of my younger self's ears.

  • 1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?
I heard Walter trout in 89 and went straight out and bought an encore Strat. It was awful but I loved it.

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?
Depends. If I’m at home it would be one of my custom built raycaster strats. A sea foam one with a wenge neck that just feels like part of me.
Mid my studio was burning I’d grab my Paduak N4.

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?
An 88 Strat in off white with a kahler trem.

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?
Rack mounted helix (hence why selling the jem)

5: What strings do you use?
    NYXL 10s balanced tension.

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?
Not actually double tracking on a take and using the short delay trick. Bugs me now.

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?
Warming up on my little Martin.

    8: ...And five minutes after?
    Cleaning my strings.

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
I knocked my bass player off the back of the stage by accident. He kind of carried on plying while climbing back though so all props to him.

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?
If your practice session feels like a chore stop and come back later. The minute music isn’t fun is the minute you need to step away and come back fresh.

At the Bar, getting a pint.

    8: ...And five minutes after?
At the Bar getting a pint.

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
Aside from forgetting to tune up after the last song was in drop D, it's got to be the drunken punter and mic stand that fell onto my pedal board bending all the knobs on a DD3 and Keeley Compressor i had at the time and soaking the rest.

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?

    My Classic Player 60s Strat.

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?

    8: ...And five minutes after?
    Probably the same!

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
To be honest, nothing terrible ever happened on stage, but I'm sure I messed up a few solos!

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?
Practice properly, stop noodling and you might have a hope of getting better.  In fairness, I could tell myself that now!

  • 1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?
Black encore 3/4 size strat thing for Xmas present when I was 12. I wanted to be a bass player so I took the bottom two strings off.

It cane in in a pack with a battery headphone amp and also a little JHS amp which I discovered when you switched the power on the adaptor from 12 to 3v fuzzed like a beast. Had me friends dropping their jaws when I could play the beatles’ Revolution.

first guitar I paid for was an epiphone Sheraton at the height of oasis’ fame. Cost £330 from flying pig

    A cigarette usually

    8: ...And five minutes after?
    Emptying a pint glass

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
Few broken string incidents but think I got away with them. Shattering ear drums with an ebow

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?
Dont sell your gear. You’ll regret it.

1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?
Squier strat, probably in 1993/4, long before I new anything about set-ups or intonation.

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?
My mum's old Ibanez classical, just for sentimental reasons.

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?
    Again my mum's old classical - 1972 I think.

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?

1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?
Not sure I can remember the guitar I learnt on as a kid. First half decent guitar I owned was a Hokada dreadnought which I fitted with a piezo. I loaned it to my son who probably sold it for a line.

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?
Tricky one; my accounting brain would say the Fylde Alchemist but my heart would go for the Music Man Axis Supersport Family Reserve.

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?
The 1981 Yamaha SA2000 I just acquired from Dominic - a real beaut!

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?
Maybe a baritone- intrigued as to the slightly different dimension it could add to a band.

5: What strings do you use?
Depends on the guitar. Typically Elixir Custom Light on acoustics and Slinky’s on the electrics.

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?
Haven’t done much recording since my youth. At that time our sound guy had just acquired an echo copycat so it sounded like we were singing in an empty cathedral.

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?
Having a natter or a pee!

    8: ...And five minutes after?
Having a natter or a pee!

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
Usually starting a song in the wrong key. Once I even got through a whole verse in the wrong time signature.

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?
    Give more time to theory!

1 first guitar was, bizarrely, a 60's tele inherited  when my mad hippie uncle died in the mid 70s - sold for a princely sum some years later.

    2 - it'd be the K Yairi

    3 oldest - early 80s Gordon Smith GS1

    4. I'd like another tele but my child's university funding precludes it.

    5. D'Addarios 10 on the beater, 11 on the Yairi, 10 on the GS

    6. I'd have been a little less pissed.

    7.  Drinking beer

    8. Drinking beer

    9. I dropped a friend's Fender Musicmaster bass and broke a tuning machine.

    10. to my younger self - sober up you tit.

1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?
First electric was a Columbus Les Paul in cherry sunburst. At the time (1984ish), the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. Played like a cheese grater.

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?
Fully assembled would probably be my CV Squier Tele. If I could grab a bag of bits it would be my Strat partscaster build.

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?
My Squier precision bass, which must ne nearly 10 years old.

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?
The last guitar I looked at in the classifieds.

5: What strings do you use?
    Ernie Ball 9s.

6 If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?
    Never done any

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?
Never played live, but if rehearsals are anything to go by, trying to find out which bit of the signal chain isn't working this time.

    8: ...And five minutes after?
    Inhaling beer I suspect.

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
    I'll let you know.

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?
It's not about left hand speed. None of it is worth a light if you can't hold a rhythm or hit the right strings at the right time.

Edit: And learn some theory you lazy git.

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage? Nowt...that’s the joy of never having played in front of a live audience.

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar? Don’t stubbornly stick to staying self taught - have some lessons!

1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?
Its an Eko - i believe it's a ranger, electro acoustic from the 70s that my dad gave me when I was nine. It was/is all cracked and broken. He had his mate turn the nut round to make it left handed for me but i was that small the buttons got in the way so i ripped them out when i was about twelve. Not a great move. I still like to play it.

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?
Tough one thats like choosing between my kids. Probably my Les Paul

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?
    The eko

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?
    a klon

5: What strings do you use?
Daddario tens. I can't stand ernie balls.

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?
Better tone - always a better tone.

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?
    Stressing.

    8: ...And five minutes after?
    Beer obviously.

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
    Amplifier set on fire

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?
The musical world is bigger than one hendrix single of your dad's.

1: What was your first guitar and when did you get it?
My dear Mum bought me an acoustic guitar at a school fete back in 1974. I didn't know the first thing about guitars but I tried to learn my first chords on this diabolical instrument. It was a nylon string guitar that had been strung with steel strings which were rusty. As a result the action was insanely high so I had to cut pieces of sticking plaster and apply them to my fingertips in order to fret the notes. After a couple of months I gave up playing guitar. I came back to guitars a couple of years later after I tried a friend's instrument and realised that mine was an 'utter dog'. I strummed it again many years later and we all fell about laughing at what can only be described as distortion from an acoustic guitar. It was truly the devil's instrument.

2: The building’s burning down – what one guitar do you save?
    1965 Fender Stratocaster

3: What’s the oldest guitar that you own?
    1965 Fender Stratocaster

4: And the next piece of gear you’d like to acquire?
    1960 Gibson Les Paul Jr.

5: What strings do you use?
For electric, Elixir 11-49. For acoustic, Elixir 12-54

6: If you could change one thing about a recording of yours, what would it be?
My husky vocal tone on a 1987 recording session. Due to a bad cold.

7: What are you doing five minutes before you go onstage?
Adjusting my wig...oops...did I say that out loud?

    8: ...And five minutes after?
Struggling to remove my sweaty vinyl stage pants.

9: What’s the worst thing that’s ever happened to you onstage?
A misplaced attempted kick at a giant bouncing ball (at a concert) sent my Fractal Audio AxeFX cartwheeling across the stage. I couldn't stop to fix it because I was singing lead vox/playing guitar at the time. One of the female singers had to drag it back to position for me while I played on. It didn't miss a beat!

10: What advice would you give your younger self about playing the guitar?
Get a GOOD teacher and practice hard with a metronome. The only lesson I ever took was with an old 'jazz' guitarist who was, I found out later, notoriously impatient and a jazz snob.  I was so shattered by that 30mins that I never returned or took another lesson...ever!
