Superlux PRA628 good enough for live use?

I'm looking for a mic for putting my backline amp through the PA when playing live.  The Superlux seems to get good reviews, both on Thomann and on other threads here.  Is there any good reason to spend more than twice as much to get a Sennheiser e609?

https://www.thomann.de/de/superlux_pra_628_mkii.htm

Based on the following comparison, I found the Sennheiser to have significantly more clarity and sparkle.

In this one however, they sound very similar - although being YouTube of course it's subject to heavy compression:

Can anyone who has used both of these comment on how they compare?  And at the end of the day, is anyone going to notice the difference live?

  • Have a look at the Stagg SDM70 (SM57 copy) I've been using one live for about 3 months now, sounds great.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm quite keen on not having a mic stand in front of the cab if possible - plus I'm told flat mics like the PRA928 / e609 are better for rejection of ambient noise (read: drummer).

  • I just hang the stagg Mic over the front of my amp

The super lux mics are fine.
A decent signal that sounds fine with little eq, I used to have a couple and only switched over to the sennheiser mics as customers have expectations - if it’s for your own gigs then theyll be fine.

Is dangling it over the cab good enough, or do I need a stand?

I use the Superlux for every gig, and it sounds great. The only problem is it's so cheap I just throw it in the bag of leads without thinking about it, so it looks pretty battered. I probably wouldn't do that with the Sennheiser.

If you get one, check the tightness of the two little screws which hold it together, my guitar suddenly started sounding very weird through the monitors a few gigs back because they'd come loose.

Yes - I do that regularly if I worry band members are going to knock stands - a bit of gaffa on the cable to hold it in place.

I do carry a couple of tiny Hercules stands that are handy for micing cabs and they tuck in close but you don’t have to use a stand.

Well, I just bought one - I'll post back here once I've had chance to give it a try.

I've been using one for gigs over the last 6 months or so and have no complaints, especially about not having to take (and faff with) another mic stand.

Dangle it over the top and wrap the cable through and around the amp's handle so it's adjustable in height and you're good to go.

If it ever failed or broke then I might fork out for a 609 or 906 - but only because of the name.

Good tip about the screws from p90(he's no)fool above - I'll check mine next time it comes out of the gig bag.

  • I've done hundreds of gigs with my Superlux PRA628. I love it. Gigs have ranged from pub gigs to outdoor festivals and theaters and I've never had a single complaint. I would fully recommend one. I've considered buying a spare just since they're so cheap!

Me and the other guitarist both use them in my band, for the price including a case and a amp clip you cant really go wrong.

As promised, some feedback: I played my first gig with the PRA628 a couple of weeks back, and it sounded great.  I'm happy with the purchase :)

The Superlux is a fab mic - I prefer the sound of mine to the SM57 I have. They are a bargain.
