today i have been mostly listening to... a whole ton of late 70s early 80s new wavey things & this song prob got an instant replay, as it's such perfect cheeky alt pop.

& it also made me think how many national anthems (& mutations-mutilations of) get into songs. the beatles (all you need is love), hendrix (star spangled), sex pistols (god save), banshees ('deutschland uber alles' in their version of the lord's prayer).

this intro to this is the japanese national anthem, right?

Lantlos - Melting Sun - just an epic album. Huge guitars. The whole album is superb, this is what's on right now at Chateau Sporky.

Can't post video as doesn't seem to work on youtube, but I heard James' new single You can Do Better Than That this morning.  Always liked James and having heard it twice I think its pretty good.

Today I have been listening mostly to remixes by acts I generally think of as ok-but-not-outstanding of acts that I generally think of as ok-but-not-outstanding. The end results are better than either manage on their own.

First up - The Echelon Effect remixing This Patch Of Sky.

Second - Rival Consoles remixing Codes In The Clouds.

This was on the telly yesterday - there was a lump of "Guitar Heroes at the BBC" on the Yesterday channel. The B to F#m in the second line of the verse - just brilliant.

I also found this, great stuff.

I'm sure this will surprise a few people... The first Maroon 5 album, "Songs About Jane". Picked it up in a OP Shop (charity shop). I have known "Harder to Breathe" for years, great song. Always loved the riff and the funky rhythm/timing, it's very catchy. Just never listened to any of their other stuff. Turns out I've heard "She Will Be Loved" plenty of times before, and while I feel that is the weakest song on the album I was pleasantly surprised that there's actually some really great 'pop rock' songs on the rest of the album that I've never heard. That one's a keeper. :)

this totally seconded. chvrches have some great moments. lauren (mayberry of chvrhces) and anna calvi are my two favourite female voices at the moment. pretty special singers-songwriters and not heard nearly enough in the 'mainstream'.

aside from my usual diet of late 1970s postpunk and early 80s goth, have been indulging in some joyous pops today. and this has had (by far!) the most plays.

always in my all time top half dozen 'pure pop joy' moments from the 1980s, along with other alwaysers like 'party fears two' (associates).

and corrine drewery! that voice, that high glam and cheeky charm, a cool-as fashion designer too. melt...
