What the hell is this melody?

What's Hot
I’ve got this melody stuck in my head, and I can’t work out what it is. I’m sure it’s from a well-known song, but perhaps it’s not, and I’ve got the makings of a 1980s power ballad.

I did a quick iPhone recording. Can anyone help identify it?

The progression is a generic I-V-vi-IV. It probably fits several songs.

I nominate The Big Ship by Brian Eno and its close cousin, With Or Without You by U2.

That's a bit of an understatement

  • Neither of those. I know it’s a I-V-vi-VI, as that was what I was playing around with when the melody emerged. I was just playing the changes with arpeggios, and I thought, hang on, I know that song.

I’m almost certain that this particular melody, or something very close, is an old 80s hit. But as you’ve pointed out, just about every solemn ballad-style hit ever has used I-V-vi-VI.

    My trading feedback

is it crazy how saying sentences backwards creates backwards sentences saying how crazy it is?

Actually, it is a bit of a typographical error (or auto spell checker dunnit and I am culpable for failing to check before posting).  :3

My bad.  Misread Funkfingers post and assumed that said U2 and others were the same sequence
