following on from the baja refin and going with the mantra “one is good, two is better”. I decided it was time to sort out my blue tele...

had the body in its current form for a while now, it even had a neck on it, it was even used in anger!... hated the neck tho’ horrible allparts slim profile thing...

the bands bass banjo player was putting putting together a tele and wanted a neck so the allparts neck was thrust his way!... which left me with this:

No much use without a handle!...

reading a couple of build threads on here I noticed that @customkits had mentioned he and @johnP_90 ;;; were in the process of putting together some proper vintage spec tele necks!!!!

hmmmm, interesting!... a few email exchanges and promises of money later I managed to get in on the limited run and have blagged myself a stunning vintage correct, slab board tele neck

Its Fecking stunning!...

So so far it’s been fitted to the body and had a cheeky coat of tint...

Whilst I was at his workshop, @customkits  very kindly let me have a play on some of his “bursts” that he builds....

I really dont have the words to describe just how utterly stunning those guitars are... if I can sell my one good kidney I will have one off him!...

more tele updates soon!.

    Really good job save for one minor detail;

slab boards rarely, if ever, have flat sawn necks, because if they bulge (as flat sawn can) the slab pops off....

fender slabs were 99% rift or 1/4 sawn.

Yes it is. Notably the rust on the bridge and the slight gloss that's still on the paint.
Mine is all satin with no rust so it's a slightly different look which is why I thought they'd look good in the same photo.

I've toyed with the idea of replacing the guard on mine with a proper lacquered mint green one but what it has already just looks genuinely old, albeit still white, so I've held off so far.

well none of those old boards look like they've lifted, we do use hot hide glue, I'm not sure fender did though

They look a lot worse in that picture to be fair... bad lighting!...

Better get the neck finished before the fingerboard falls off I guess! :)

    yes be quick about it

Leo must have spent days and endless hours picking wood that is the right grain orientation then tapping it and stress testing to make sure those bloody rosewood boards stayed put  =)

Tuners are on... with just the perfect gap between each one... serious ocd towards detail on this neck...

Just to be pedantic, the top 2 and bottom one are flat sawn.

the middle ones are varying degrees of rift dawn, but with tool marks parallel to the fretboard join.

like @customkits  kits alludes to.  I don’t think Fender worried too much about it, just got a load of mostly flatsawn maple and used all the variability within that. If you get a big blank of flatsawn maple the bits closer to the edge will often be more riftsawn, but Leo wasn’t the sort to waste it.

luckily maple is often stiff enough that either will be stable

i don’t think I have ever seen a vintage quartersawn neck

Thanks Wez that's my view and my neck looks very typical to me, as long as that wood is seasoned and stable I'll use it

Leo was a penny pincher even mixing slot head and philips screws on one guitar, he didn't care imo

Strings on... rough set up... happy happy happy... :)

I should come clean and point out that the ONE thing thats not vintage correct is the radius... 7.25" to 9.25" compound... and its fecking glorious to play... With the profile I will let @customkits explain that one as my description of "best neck ever" probably wont satisfy the masses.

Cleaned up the bridge a little, just to get rid of the rust (it'll rust again after a few sweaty gigs tho')

Waiting on some compensated saddles, period correct knobs and a decent neck plate... Other than that its done
