Cats don't like travel

What's Hot
It is anything up to 5 hours from here to the place I'll be working in. That's too long for any cat to be kept in a carrying cage.

I was thinking of splitting the journey in half, stopping overnight approx half way where there is a cattery and a B&B. I know she won't like the cattery but its got to be better than the carrying cage.

Any other ideas?

I'm not sure I understand the question. Are you moving house and this is a one off trip, or are you looking at taking your cat to work with you?

    One-off trip.

@quarky are you suggesting sedating her for the rip?

Semi-seriously, but I would look into it. Not to knock her out, but to make her drowsy perhaps. Then do it all in one go. Ask the vet if they can recommend anything.

I saw one guy on youtube using a hang glider. No seat belt for the cat either, but maybe get one if you are going to go that route, just to be safe.

    Feliway?

    Plug ins before you go.

Spray the carrier for the trip.

More plug ins when you get to where you’re going.

It’s expensive but it does seem to work with ours.

I can't help about the shape I'm in, I can't sing I ain't pretty and my legs are thin

But don't ask me what I think of you, I might not give the answer that you want me to

When I used to take my cat to even the vets, the cage was only to transfer into/out of the car. My cat(s) would make themself comfy on the parcel shelf or dash top and sleep or watch the world go by. You just have to rebox before getting out or opening a door/window. Roobi would love to watch the road with you I'm sure. Not sure on the legal position of this though.

Can guarantee if I did that id have one of the cats on my lap and the other one rubbing it's face in to the gear stick.

  • I had a cat escape from its box and then hide under the brake pedal.

Phil. I’ve taken cats on 2.5/3 hour trips with no problem. I’ve had them loose but it’s dangerous if it decides it fancies curling up in the driver’s footwell!

    In your shoes I’d...

Stop at the services half way let him have a drink and a bite to eat and roam around the car for half an hour before puttting him back in the carrier. The trip to the cattery then a new house will be far more unsettling.

Also the advice above re. something to relax is a good shout.

If your cat is anything like ours around other cats (completely psychotic) the cattery will be more stressful than doing the journey in one.

Mines ok in the cage to and from the vets but recently a trip to the cattery which was an hours drive was a bit intense. He hated it.

Travel is stressful for animals, so whatever you do take lots of food and hydration for them, which is a pain because if anything like my cat, he doesnt drink a bloody thing, ever.

If I had to make your journey and its a one off, I’d recommend putting them in a local cattery to home and not taking them.

But if thats not an option, depending on your car, I’d take the parcel shelf out, put a dog guard up, line the boot with blankets and treats and keep the windows down in the cabin.
if your cats susceptible to cat nip I’d put some in there too.

I’m more anxious than most about these things, but I wouldnt risk letting them free in the cabin. Almost definitely illegal if a copper see’s you. Probably something like a distraction to the driver etc.

Also if there is a smash (rare but you never know), kitty would need all 7 lives and a shit tonne of cash to come out of it well.

I know it probably wouldnt be financially viable, or even possible, but you can book animal animal ambulances for taxi duties.

This ones local to me but I imagine there are loads. Never used them so can’t say anything mind. Trained people and specialist vehicles with vets on call etc.

    Just a thought.

when we moved with our 2 we thought it'd be a nightmare, especially with the female as she had a right epi on the short journey from FIL's house to ours. We ended up getting these jumbo cat carry boxes, with lots of room to move about and they were both fine for the whole 4 hour journey.

I'm not locked in here with you, you are locked in here with me.

Our cat has to go for an annual checkup to get a yearly prescription for his flea/parasite medication. He went mental in the 3 minute journey and broke out of his cage twice. We've had that cage for 25 years and we've never had a cat bend the bars like that. If you don't know how your cat will respond to the journey, you need to do a test run first because having a maddeened cat in the car is a recipe for disaster.

Take her on a short journey on local roads where you can pull over, just to see how she'll respond. Also, if it doesn't work, a local cattery or, even better, a trusted neighbour would be better.

Mavis, a cat who lives over the road from me, loves going out in her family's car - she's jumped into mine a few times but I've resisted taking her along in case she jumps out somewhere she doesn't know her way home from.

  • A friend of mine got their vet to prescribe some kind of sedative for the cat... for a similarly long house move journey.
