Some of you are just missing something. Brian May, Van Halen, Dire Straits, Jeff Beck!?

FWIW I personally hate Muse because I think their songs and sound are crap, but they are in no way objectively comparable to the bands above ! hah

@ICBM Totally agree with you regarding Roy Buchanan and Richard Thompson. I actually quite like some of RT's work though :)
Sign me up. Although I like Buchanan's playing; it's the sound he makes while doing it that is a problem. RT's more recent playing (that I've heard, I'm not an expert) sounds so weedy. What happened to the fabulous sound of the Fairport albums?

leaving aside 'bad' as subject to taste & prejudices, & focusing on pure sound.

i used to have the blast first compilation entitled 'nothing short of total war', a double LP/CD compilation of outtakes, weirdtakes & experiments of lots of the key 'blast first' bands of late 80s.

one track on there was by lee ranaldo (or entire SY) called 'i've got a scratchy heart' & it was basically two minutes of him grinding a vinyl record to ruin by scrubbing the stylus across it like a thoroughbred maniac.

on the few occasions i have been asked to make a DJing contribution to an event, it's always the one i end on. scares sound engineers & PA owners to death. hence why i get asked to make DJing contributions so rarely.

would love to post but can't find it on youtube. but if it sounds like your kinda thing, maybe you can find it on spotify or something.

Bit late to this particular party but for my two pence worth, and I'm probably going to get flamed for this, I'd have to thrown in The Beatles' A Hard Day's Night as a contender.

This album was my first exposure to real music when I was about four, my dad had (probably still does) the album on Vinyl and even at the age of four I found it dry, lifeless and tinny.  I liked the songs but thought the overall sound was pants.  I still can't listen to it now and is probably the reason I could never get into The Beatles properly.

I certainly really dislike the guitar sound on a lot of the early Beatles records - George's Gretsch Country Gent particularly, it sounds nasal and plonky. George hated it too apparently... once he got some better guitars - the SG and the Strat in particular I think - he gave the Gretsch away.

This is probably partly why I've always been much more of a fan of the Beatles from Sgt. Pepper onwards, rather than the early albums. I had the Red and Blue compilation albums as a teenager, and wore the blue one out - while the red one remained nearly unplayed.

I never worked out why George played the guitar he did for so long. It can't have been that he couldn't afford a better one...

A top contender for the most irritating noise ever to be recorded for sure!

  • That horrible breathy "winsome" singing that accompanies equally apalling ukeleles whilst murdering some really rather good songs in order to make you hate them and buy stuff on adverts.
And then the same crap that gets released WITHOUT being on adverts. Gets me all homicidal.

Without a doubt the WORST sound ever committed to tape was the guitar solo in Private Dancer by Tina Turner. I'll bet it was played by some hot shot guitarist but I think he should be pistol whipped in a dark alleyway for this ATROCITY!
    It was Jeff Beck :)

He certainly gave one away, and that got part exchanged for another guitar by the recipient!

The other Country Gent fell off the roofrack of the car on the way back from a gig - never to be seen again.

The Strat started to feature from Rubber Soul onwards (NoWhere Man being the most noticeable). But really, for me the most definitive Beatles guitar was the Epiphone Casino - once Paul bought his one (Taxman etc) George and John bought their own. Paul says its his fave guitar, George said his one was "very special" to him and John's one... well, apart from his well-documented falling out with it during the Let it Be sessions, he kept it til his death, even though it was pretty much worn out. Yoko still has it.

But going back to the thing about the early Beatles records - I don't mind the sounds. There's a naiviety about them, and some of that will come from how the early sessions were mic'd up - look at the pics online to see what I mean. Close micing hadn't really come in yet... However, George especially has said in later years that he "hated" his guitar sound and begged Epstein to let him buy something different. There was some kind of tie-in (not sponsorship as we know it) with Gretsch - and Brian was keen to preserve the Beatles' image. Part of that was the big Gretsch, the little Hofner and the little Rickie.

Its certainly not as bad a guitar sound as some are making out - and there was far worse.

I'm a fan of hip hop and when it's done well... great flow, clever lyrics and good beats its wicked.

However, allow me to introduce you to morrison. He can't rap, he seems to have 2 brain cells to rub together  and spends his time boasting about his crimes.

These days you don't even have to be able to rap so long as you are 'real and 'all about that life'

This crap has nearly 2 million views.

    Enjoy
