Recommend an interesting intermediate acoustic song

What's Hot
just got myself a lovely acoustic guitar and I've not played acoustic for ages.

I need something to learn that will challenge me but not frustrate!

I used to have nothing else matters down last time I tried acoustic. So something in that level of complexity. I don't have independence between my thumb and fingers and that's going to be another project.

Any suggestions?

Profession of Violence, UFO.  Nice finger picked for most of the song, then you can overdub the electric solo (presumably schenker? ) on top once you’ve worked it out
the vocals aren’t too demanding either.

fire and rain is a good song.  You can play it simply, and you can the various bits that jamestaylor puts into it

Cannonball by Damien Rice? I play it capo'd at the 7th fret in B, learn the riff and some cool chords.

  • Babe I'm Gonna Leave You. Led Zeppelin. Nice picking sections and interesting rhythm changes. Manage to get my fingers all knotted up trying to play it, but great song.

    Eva Cassidy’s version of Songbird.
I haven’t played in ages but I’m going to learn that song and hopefully record it properly for my wife for our 10th anniversary in May.
She’ll probably just turn it off after 8 bars!

  • Hole Hearted. Extreme. Takes a bit of work, but by no means impossible and sounds killer

  • Nick Drake - Time Has Told Me
    Davy Graham - Anji
Simon & Garfunkel - For Emily (Wherever I May Find Her)

Also, lots of Badly Drawn Boy songs like The Shining fall into that category. Really great songwriter, Damon Gough, melancholy without the sentimentality, and some lovely picked acoustic lines in a lot of his music.

Great recommendations. Badly Drawn Boy's "A Minor Incident" is one of those songs which I just love playing.

I came in to recommend "Day Is Done" by Nick Drake, as it's likely to help a bit with the finger independence. If you can play Nothing Else Matters, with a bit of practice, you can play this.

Or you could just go for Radiohead's "Street Spirit" which is often played with a pick, but is a great fingerstyle exercise anyway with those 3-1-3-2-3-1-3-2 patterns.

Just about every song that the late Eva Cassidy sang irritates me.  I know that liking music is a personal thing, one mans meat is anothers poison and all that, but I simply cannot stand the warbling she uttered.  I could never listen long enough to decide on her guitar playing.  YMMV

I quite like playing classical stuff on steel string.

Give Lagrima by Tarrega a try.

Ahh this guy has some great interpretations. His version of Moon River is one of my go-to acoustic songs.

Definitely falls in the beginner to intermediate sweetspot, and sounds absolutely killer.

I gave this a wis.  Not because of the Eva Cassidy bashing but the comment about music being a personal thing.

@Andrew - look on YouTube searching for song title you like with "acoustic" at the end.  Try playing the ones you like.

Also search justinguitar on YouTube.  He has loads of acoustic lessons.
