Yeah its a bit mental but check YouTube for DOD gonkulator for some demos on what it does.  Probs very limited specialist appeal but reckon its good we have access to weird and wonderful as well as more normal.

  • So last night my band rehearsed using a JamHub for the first time...very cool piece of kit! I used a 2 x mono -> 1 x stereo 1/4" cable for that...plugged the two monos into the GSP1101 left/right line outs.

It sounded very fizzy at first but then I found a setting in the I/O section for line out and changed that to 'mixer', which seemed to restore the goodness...but are there other settings I need to tweak for this setup? Does the global cab apply to the line outs as well as the XLR? Unfortunately, with the JamHub you have to use 1/4" inputs for instruments.

The setup Wizard is a quick way to tell gsp what its plugged in to and asks if you want global cab or preset and if you want it on 1/4"

My other thought is a not too expensive stereo DI that accepts xlr and outputs 1/4" or xlr.

but if ya remember your 1/4" settings for your amp setup too then the wizard will make switches as simple as you like without going to each setting individually.

  • It seems to apply XLR settings to the 1/4" line outs automatically if you select 'mixer' as the target. To me it sounds better using the headphone out though for some reason.

Weirdly, my band members were saying it didn't sound so good last time we practiced, even though I didn't change anything and we were using exactly the same setup! Go figure... :)

I've been playing around a bit with different cabs and settings...I seem to get a bit of a 'honky' kind of tone when using high gain...I've been playing with dialling that out using a narrow band high freq cut in the parametric eq. That works pretty well.

I'm not sure on the cabs...I downloaded some OH free IRs and they seem to be the best, but the stock alt 4x12 is good too. I find most of the others too middy for my taste.

What i meant was if using xlr can set both up exactly as required so don't need to swap settings every time you practise.

if using 1/4" for both practise and amp/live use though I'd say the wizard is quickest way.  Change in output volume and input gain may be reason for change in sound maybe volume was set different last time so not as much in sweet spot (take a mental note of where volume control is set).  Or maybe the jam hub input is better impedance matched for headphone out.

  • Any thoughts on how to get an infinite sustain / feedback kind of thing? There are a couple of points I'd like to get some sustain going and since the GSP only has one distortion slot, once that is on I'm kind of out of options and I don't have a real amp to go and hold my guitar next to :o)

Something to do with using a compressor maybe?

If maxing gain on amp model and or dist pedal gives feedback you could possibly add those changes to the control stomp button.

  • I have been using control as a volume boost (preset level) on most patches...but I might set up a separate 'feedback' patch...the beauty of gapless patch changes! :)

I took mine to band practice the other day because a) I wanted to lighten my load and b) it's my back up and I hadn't used it for a while so wanted to make sure it still did what I needed it to do.

Normally I use a Kemper or an AxeFX II so thought the GSP would be a bit of a comedown but it sounded bloody epic! Doesn't have the realism of the other two when listening closely but, in a band context, it sounds big and cuts through a mix beautifully. I amplified it through my Red Sound/dxr10 rig and I was hugely impressed.

Still a great little box and cheap as chips nowadays.

  • Cool - the GSP1101 is the first modeller I've really got on with. It has just the right amount of tweakability for me without becoming daunting. And it seems to be much easier to get good sounds out of it than with other modellers. Playing it via a power amp into a real cab I honestly don't feel like I'm missing anything compared to a real amp. I really can't see me going back to amps.

I have less experience of the direct sounds - we have started rehearsing using  a Jam hub and it has taken me a bit more tweaking to get happy with the sounds that way. But it is working really well now. It's interesting that you found it held its own going direct into a DXR10 setup. I'd like to try that.

The dxr10's are really good but, I've found it's using it in combination with the Red Sound RS-LG12 that has really gelled. Not a cheap solution but it has tons of headroom and sounds great. First time I've not missed using a guitar cab and power amp on stage.

And of course to add to its ability 4 cable any combo or pop fave rack pre-amp in loop for some added sound options and real preamp for your favourite sounds.

  • There's no way of re-tasking the front row of buttons on the control 2 is there?

    Nope why?

Why not plug any old 1/4" latching amp stomp switch into exp2 on control 2 calibrate it (with it off for fully up).  Then use expression 2 as your volume boost switch for all your presets and use control for any special combos (like turn on a few efx together or changing something to get a more feedback sound.

  • It's just that I mostly use the second row of buttons and I find it tricky to have to reach over the first row of patch buttons, especially when launching into a solo.
0reaction image LOL 0reaction image Wow! 0reaction image Wisdom
  • I rarely use the patch buttons at all and never during a song.
