I suppose it leaks less with the roof off too...
I have had two of them, and while leaks were never an issue, condensation and then ice on the inside of the windscreen during winter time was a bit of a pain!

If I was in the market now I would be looking at Jaguar F-Type convertibles.

    Budget?

I’m looking for an F-Type for my second mid-life crisis car.  Or I might go all-in and swap the Merc for a Bentley Coupe if the footballers have moved on to something else by then.

    :D
Having trouble posting images here?  This might help.

Agreed, although blue with white stripes for me.

as an Elise owner I wouldn't recommend one for this purpose. MX5 would be ideal and wouldn't break the bank. I had one before the Elise and it was a great drive on the road (I use the Elise mostly on track and bought a Citroen C1 for the road when I got the Lotus).

I have no problems getting in and out of the Elise but for a daily driver the leaks and noise would annoy me, and I liked the heated seats in the MX5.

Here is my mid-life crisis car, bought in advance when I was 27. 26 years ago, and still mine.

I'd go for the mx5 as a reliable sports car and get the 456 too.

I had an identical oew MGA coupe. Very nice car. Swapped it for an MGA roadster. The coupe was practical for daily use but the roadster was more flies-in-the-teeth fun.

If I didnt have the constraights of needing a massive boot and 4 doors then I’d be all over the Mercedes C Class Coupe - lovely looking machine inside and out, sensible money, and who cares how it drives because in the real world you just follow the car in front, which is usually a Honda Jazz.

That's a Renault Wind. One of my neighbours has one and beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but that gives me wind looking at it.
My comment was, of course, facetious.

The mags are going nuts for the Alpine. It looks like great fun. Not sure if the posher-trimmed one is out until next year though.

Echo an Elise. Do miss my highly tunes S1 (190bhp with S2 shocks and springs)
I like my S2; I can honestly say there is no car I would rather have.

(I've also got a 4-door saloon car and a clunker to take things to the tip, though.)

  • Nissan 370Z?

Mx5 for the balanced roadster you can have fun without losing your licence.

Cayman for the balanced roadster you can have fun in with possibly losing your licence

C63.  Rev it at lights and scare birds out of trees for a 100m radius.

Audi RS3.  Exciting! - Enjoy getting woken up by men in balaclavas in the night

    The XK's look nice.

    What model S2?

It seems like a lifetime ago now when I bought my first brand new ‘S’ in 2006, which I did all sorts to including adding a mental Stage 2 exhaust, before trading it in against a new ‘R - White Edition’ in 2009

I did a lot of miles in both, but like you also had other more sensible cars at the same time.

F type is a great looker and good value  ...XK is a porky barge and a bit Japanese looking ...nothing very sporty about it and very sterile to drive
Still say you can't beat an 80s 911 ....you'll grow to love the looks and the handling characteristics

Depends what the budget is. A few other thoughts from those already mentioned:

    A sixties classic .... 1969 Alfa GTV 1750 (circa £50k)

Two newer classics from say 1991 ... Lotus Elan (£10k) and BMW Z1 (£30-£35k)

An '05 Aston Martin DB9 for under £30k.

Any TVR ... take your pick ... £10k to £40k+

A Chevy Corvette. In production for over 50 years, so plenty of choice.

    Maserati Ghibli ... under £30k for a 4 year old 3 litre V6 coupe with 35,000 miles?

Ha! Thought of these. Looked them up and discovered that out of a production of 500 fixed heads/coupes, only 41 were officially imported into the UK. And 35 out of 400 for the spider version.

And Pistonheads.co.uk have five listed in their classifieds. One for auction. The other four are all over £200,000. All low mileage examples, too.
