The Morgan was ace. Just hilarious fun - surprisingly rapid, unsurprisingly vague, loads of character, and the view out over the bonnet is lovely. I would very much like another go.

But the Evora was sublime. Brain-meltingly quick when the chap was driving (I was rather more restrained), very comfy but also very pointy. Marvellous thing. Now I just need a house with a garage... and to try the Alpine.

No more V6 Lotuses being made now, which seems an awful shame.

Here is my mid-life crisis car, bought in advance when I was 27. 26 years ago, and still mine.

I'd go for the mx5 as a reliable sports car and get the 456 too.

That bronze coloured Roadster in the background is a beaut.

    Are you buying or PCPing?

The Alpine has the advantage that it's not "all about the engine" in the way that say an M car or an AMG is. It's basically lifted from the Mégane RS which means it should be fairly reliable and fairly cheap in sports car terms to sort out should something go wrong.

If I were going down the PCP route I'd probably go for whatever had the lowest monthlies as I'll not be getting any return on the money spent regardless. With £50k of my own money I'd be much more inclined to get something more exclusive that would hold it's value better. With the right 911 etc you may actually lose very little (although running costs may be higher). I'd go so far as to get more niche advice than you'll get on a guitar forum.

Actually a 1M might fit the bill...

You're also getting into i8 money which isn't the fastest thing on the road but is very much an "event" to drive.

    Buying.

The Lotus has a Toyota V6 (though with a dirty great supercharger) so has a similar advantage (also it sounds all mechanical and ace).

No. Way over budget and too practical.

And will break down every three weeks. You’ll also need a skip to store all the bits that fall off it.

Alpine test drive is booked for a couple of weeks' time - really busy at work so I can't really do a skive again. Vroom!

And now this saucy minx has turned up. [edit] At the dealer, not at Chateau Sporky. Yet. Got to try the A110 first, but this would be a very decent fallback option.

Make sure you put a quiet exhaust on it.

Don't want you disturbing your neighbours now.

    It's got a button.

In "touring" mode the button makes it louder.

In "Track" and "Race" modes the button makes it quieter.

    Sorted. :)

Are you sure that’s the correct way round?

Either way, if only children had a button like that........

It's been that way round on every Evora, if that answers your question.

  • @Sporky. ; What's the build quality like on modern Loti?

Well, the Evora is much nicer than a Europa, but it's still pretty stripped back. You can tell that most of the money goes on the chassis...

A Merc SL (fer example) is much plusher, but the Lotus is infinitely more involving to drive. Better, too, than the 911 I had for a day, but again not as nice inside. The seats are great though. Well, the front ones are. I didn't risk trying to get into the back kbes.

Hard to believe, but the Premier Edition of the Alpine doesn't have heated seats.

Ridonculous. So that'll be a factory order instead of the demonstrator, and a year's wait.

However, Lady BMcH has unambiguously said I am allowed to buy one on Monday if I like it, or an Evora if I don't.

As an alternative to the MX5 what about the GT86?

Fairy cheap, reliable and fun to drive.
Maybe a BRZ. The local Toyota places aren't great, but the localish Subaru place is.
These aren't reliable at all, i know of two BRZ's that had engine failures at under 20k.

Infinity G37, VW Passat CC R32 (rare but excellent fun) or the Jaguar XF5.0 Sport (still nothing touches a V* for driving pleasure)

Seriously? A Cayman was mentioned on page 1 and you're still asking?

Caymans are too common and too pauper-spec unless you fling ten grand of options at them. And almost as heavy as my 4wd Golf estate!

The Passat isn't an option for the same reason the TTRS isn't - I already have one 4wd Golf, no need for two. Tried a G37 years ago; nice inside, and fast, but rubbish to drive. And the XF is too big, plus I already have the sensible estate covered.
