Best albums of 2018

It's almost December so why not. Name yours... I'll give my top ten. I've just listened to the new pumpkins album and I'm a bit dissapointed overall, it may be a grower we shall see.

For those who say they've only heard a couple of albums and can't understand how someone  could listen to so much new stuff, I recommend you try Apple Music. For a tenner a month I can listen to whatever I want. Subscribing this year has led me to finding much more new music.

Snail Mail -Lush

Gwenno -Le Kov

Sleep - The Sciences

Kruangbin -Con Todo El Mundo

Kurt Vile - Bottle it in

Alice in Chains - Rainier Fog

J Mascis - Elastic Days

Green Druid - Ashen blood

Johnny Marr - Call the Comet

Mark Lanegan & Duke Garwood - With Animals

My album of the year is Le Kov by Gwenno, a psychadelic journey into an imagined Cornish alternate reality. J Mascis' album is running it close.

Amanda Shires - To the Sunset
Nathaniel Rateliff & The Nightsweats - Tearing at the Seams

  • I've only bought 4 albums released this year, so:

    7 - Beach House

Quite a few good ones from last year though so maybe I've not been looking hard enough.

I've really struggled to find anything I like this year, I have even let my eMusic account lapse after 10 years.

    I like the following;

Wye Oak - The Louder I Call....
Some brilliant tunes, especially 'You of all People'

    Boxer Rebellion - Ghost Alive

Rock *A* Teens - Sixth House

The only album I've got which was actually released in 2018 is The Spook School's Could It Be Different?, so... that.

"Take these three items, some WD-40, a vise grip, and a roll of duct tape. Any man worth his salt can fix almost any problem with this stuff alone." - Walt Kowalski

    "Just because I don't care, doesn't mean I don't understand." - Homer Simpson

  • Not sure I’ve bought any album released in 2018 but in terms of streaming, YouTube I think the one I’ve returned to most is Fight the Good Fight by The Interrupters.
Obviously as I like it the album sounds like it could have been released 40 years ago.

These two were almost there for me but the winner has to be Hopesfall's 'Arbiter', a stunning comeback record, 10 years since their last one, and sounding absolutely huge. Fans of their previous work definitely need it.

  • Low's Double Negative, by a country mile.

Excellent LPs too this year from The Breeders (All Nerve) and Parquet Courts (Wide Awake).

Dubstar's "One" is great, got that recently. Also discovered the album "Unreality" by SRSQ a couple of weeks ago, and imo it's a superb bit of work, certainly if you like Cocteau Twins/This Mortal Coil/4AD kind of stuff.
