  • The sad thing is so many people will fall for this type of nonsense. Only true alphas, who spend hours a day on a nerdy guitar forum, are immune.

Unsure if specific bullshit, but on 3 other guitars my high e string has never slipped through a tuner hole, ever, and I've never had to use any locking or wrapping methods.

£50 + parts on an own brand guitar, of which Andertons could use their professional relationship with Grover to atleast help a customer out to replace the one tuner under a lifetime warranty, is bullshit though.

I'd happily pay the labour of fitting it of course.

But, though I've never had this problem before over 15 years and approx 7 guitars, I'm open to the collective widsom and mileage of thefretboard to brand this Bullshit or Not Bullshit. Lol.
Worrying that they claim you should go to the manufacturer for a potentially faulty item you bought from them. If you bought it from them then they are responsible for any problems with it. It's up to them to follow up with the manufacturer if they want to. Would have hoped for better from Anderton's.

To be fair to them, isn't that only if the tuner had been faulty to begin with or developed a problem reasonably soon after buying?

If it's been long enough for the warranty to have ran out then I don't know that the shop who sold it would still be responsible.

That really is the sad thing. No one can be "in to" everything; so as much as I'd now know when a guitar salesman was bullshitting, when I take my car to the garage I just have to trust that what they say needs done genuinely does need done and costs what they say it costs. "It needs a new Johnson rod" as George Costanza said.

Someone interested in cars might be able to tell if a mechanic is being honest but then they might not know much about the world of laptops etc. etc.

£50 quid an hour to unscrew a tuner and screw in another one!?

    1) I'm in the wrong line of work
    My first thoughts too.

Fuck it, I’ll sit in a corner of their shop endlessly changing strings for half that.

When looking for a Charvel a few weeks ago I was told in a PMT store, when asking if a set up was included in the price, that no Fender made guitars needed a set up as they all left the factory perfectly set up.
I bought a Charvel but not from that store.

I feel like people like that should be reported, especially when it's a big name shop like that. Innocent people could be fooled easily.

I ended up buying from an independent who spent the time to chat with me over a coffee & then suggested I came back with what I was going to play the guitar through at home, an amplifi TT, for a proper demo of the guitar as they didn"t have one & it would show me exactly what sound I would get.
I went back a few days later armed with my TT & played the guitar through it, accompanied by another coffee.
There was no pressure to buy, although I did buy the guitar.
I was offered the option of having it set up before I took it away or taking it away as it was & returning when I wanted when they would set it up, if I thought anything needed altering, & show me how to change the strings & re-tune it as it is my first Floyd equipped guitar.
Cost, just the set of strings.
I had never even been in this store before but they will get my custom from now on.

  • When I bought a Gretsch Streamliner a year or so ago I couldn't get it to stay in tune.
I returned it for a set up to sort it, suggesting the felt like it was sticking... It didn't work, so I took it back in & was told.

"You'll never get a guitar with a bigsby to stay in tune on a budget model, it's just the price you pay for that design".

As regards my Gary Clark Casino he is totally correct.  It needed the briggs fix and was fine but despite all other measures it was crap

I bought my lad a PRS SE Standard a couple of years ago as he wanted a silver guitar.  It came with a tag with the name of the guy who was supposed to have set it up at the factory with some kind of proud statement that it had been set up to perfection and shouldn't need any additional fettling.

It wasn't a disastrous set-up by any means but the action was quite high, especially for small hands, and I couldn't get it lower without introducing choking so I sent it to my tech who did fettle it to perfection.  A good fret dress later and it does now play very well, but you have to question the spurious bollocks that manufacturers and retailers spout.

There is no 'H' in Aych, you know that don't you? ~ Wife

Turns out there is an H in Haych! ~ Sporky

    Bit of trading feedback here.

  • Why would you get a shop to set it up if you have to travel back to the shop? I would far rather just buy the instrument then take it to the bloke who sets up all my guitars for me and who I know will do it to my satisfaction.

I once took my Strat to the old Andy’s shop in Denmark Street for a refret. Their guitar tech spent  about 15 minutes telling me that Strats were terrible guitars, how Leo had got the design so wrong and I really should have bought a Gibson.

He was right, but you didn't need to be told that at the time ;)

Well, yes a return visit to the shop won't rush you £70 unless you have to take time off work to do it. I just prefer to get a chap I know & trust to fettle my guitars.

It doesn"t need a set up, or I wouldn"t have left the shop with it.
I have played it for nearly a week now & all I have done is just lower the action very slightly myself to suit me, everything else is fine.
The point of my post was that what PMT told me was both laughable & untrue.
The shop I bought the guitar from were honest & far more sensible.
I had half an hour playing the guitar in the shop & their suggestion that I brought with me what I actually would be using at home made perfect sense.
Also their suggestion that I may be better off playing it for a few weeks, bearing in mind it played great, & then see if I wanted anything changed made sense to me.
Any set up work is free & as I have never had a Floyd before & asked a lot of questions about changing strings & re-tuning their offer to bring the guitar back for it"s first string change & they would go through a string change/tune with me for free was again sensible, IMO.
The experience was completely the opposite of PMT.
The shop I bought the Charvel from was A Strings in Pontypridd, South Wales, & based on my, admittedly limited experience, I would recommend them.
It was my second bad experience with PMT & there will not be a third in a hurry.
