The brass monkey was where cannon balls were stored, made of brass in cold weather it contracted faster than steel so ejected said cannon balls.
These days that gets a QI style klaxon as a myth with no historical evidence.

All highly amusing, but it does raise an interesting point about being offended or something being offensive, which I learnt an impotant lesson about recently. If you call a black person the N word, they are likely to get very angry very quickly, I know this because i have a black friend, and I have seen it happen, however his view is that although it is highly offensive to him, he understands that it may not be offensive to other people, hence being offended by something is very subjective. My point being that if we use potentially contentious phrases (to some) we should be aware that it may cause offence. I have a work mate who is a committed christian. I try not to swear in front of him as a courtisy out of respect. He does not expect it, but he does appreciate that I try to moderate my language. It's just a matter of respecting other peoples views. The flip side is those vegan fuckers shoudn't try to ram their twisted ideology down my throat. LOL

I have yet to understand why anyone who thinks because something upsets / offends them the rest of the world should be barred from it? If you're upset about something why dont you show us your maturity by keeping it to yourself.
The crux of the matter precisely identified and wis’d.

There is a very disturbing movement, often emanating from student unions and other radical groups, which seeks to impose censorship on the masses with no mandate whatsoever whilst judging what is best for society and then imposing their will. Whether it be taking offence at the words of an old song, banning a list of popular fancy dress outfits, finding clapping inappropriate or a host of other actions which they wish to ban. It is easy to dismiss these people as loonies but history tells us that this can grow into something far more sinister if left unchecked. It’s a disturbing trend IMO.It is what Rowan Atkinson refers to in his videod speech as “a creeping culture of censoriousness” by “self-appointed arbiters of the public good”

So, a bunch of socialists think they know best and don't think anyone not as clever as they are (because they are at uni right?) should be trusted to make decisions.

Hmmm. I don't think that's news to be honest. I wouldn't worry as most of them are never let anywhere near real power until they grow up, and then most of them become Conservatives. This kind of thing has been going on in university student unions since the 60's, and nothing has ever come of it.

PETA exist to promote PETA and to fuel their own self-righteousness.

I know a lot of serious animal welfare people, and I don't think a single one of them has a good word to say about PETA, other than by accident.

The only people who are going to be offended by any of those phrases are people who are looking for an excuse. Or possibly a Jew or a Muslim if you asked whether they were bringing home the bacon, I suppose.

I think that was the statement from a University professor who had a fairly philosophical view but was then grasped at by PETA to promote their own agenda.

The Manchester University student union hasn’t banned clapping in favour of ‘jazz hands’

“The policy was proposed in order to encourage the use of British Sign Language (BSL) clapping during our democratic events to make those events more accessible and inclusive for all. We are not banning audible clapping – we understand that some people may be more comfortable to continue using it.”

They said the SU is not applying the rule to events held there and is simply “to be encouraged at the Union’s democratic events” which are a relatively small number over the university year.

One of the best Stroke/TIA detectors, and something I've used numerous times over the years, is to ask the patient to say "The early bird catches the worm". Wonder what PETA think about that when lives are literally in the balance.

Butter is an animal product so I find it extremely offensive.

“Political correctness gone man” is a term often used to make light of something we should perhaps actually be concerned about.

I started this thread as a genuine enquiry of vegans/vegetarians as to whether they find those phrases offensive. Those that have responded do not, so far, seem to find them so. If they did I would respect their view.

My personal concern is that of certain groups or individuals wishing to impose their ideologies on others. It seems to me that is what PETA is doing in this instance but I’m open to other opinions.

The original PETA website was acquired by an organisation called People Eating Tasty Animals.

Some people find “fuck off” offensive, but it still gets used daily.

Letting the cat out of the bag refers to the whip called the cat of nine tails being pulled from it's stowage bag to thrash a sailor, it has nothing to do with poor animals but everything to do with people abuse.
I wonder what these people would do if we went back to riding/working horses to save the planet from the internal combustion engine?

does it? I thought it was about when you bought a pig in a poke, then got it home to discover you'd bought something most people wouldn't eat and couldn't be grown enough to feed a large family even if the would eat it
"Working" software has only unobserved bugs. (Parroty Error: Pieces of Nine! Pieces of Nine!)
