Watched the new Luther episode today and there is a scene where Loofa yells that he can't possibly pick the padlock because it's pick resistant ... but I have taken up lockpicking as a hobby, and one of the easy peasy can't possibly fail locks is the Masterlock M3 - which is what was on screen. A character who carries lockpicks with them regularly should have been able to pick it faster than the director could say "cut"

As a computery person I feel 99.99% of everything ever said about computers in all TV/Film/Books is written by people who don't know what a computer is, what it's for or why you might use one... however, now that I've spent a few years with computer students I've realised that lots of people who should know these things don't so I feel less animosity to such things.

More specifically as a hackist - oh god no, it's never right (Notable exception would be Mr. Robot and even then not always perfect, or the beginning of Sneakers)

What things do other people know that make you cringe in movies and TV because you know it's BS?

Broadchuch.

There was literally nothing right about the law in it. Series 2 was particularly awful, suggesting that the victim family got to pick the prosecutor and even stating that the prosecutor was “their” lawyer, and don’t get me started on the presentation of evidence to a jury that was then disallowed and the entire cross examination process.

It was shit.

Now that I have a 2 year old I can see that dressing yourself is actually something we take for granted and I have as a result more sympathy for Superman.

Anything to do with social housing, private rented sector or homelessness on the tv is usually way off.

Cardiac arrests..

Since doing ambulance work.. all of those cpr scenes leading to a hero remarkably waking up with no use of a defib..

Or alternatively movies seem to like having a bunch of doctors shocking an Asystole/flatline rhythm...
Wouldnt be done in real life, as it doesnt respond to defibrillation and is almost always fatal..

I've been a first aider at work for years and have recently done a couple of refreshers on defib.
I cringe every time I see someone on tv or films doing heart compressions as it's nothing like real life.
It's about time all schools taught first aid at every age group.

The traumatic shit they put FBI folks through in CSI, Criminal Minds, Blacklist etc etc. If anyone really went through 2% of the kidnappings/family murder/etc etc that those guys go through they'd be instantly out of the field forever and/or given an early pension and asked politely not to sue.

Also, from experience, anything involving "finance people". It's always Wolf of Wall St, and not the reality of sitting in boring conference calls being sarcastic while on mute and working out where's got the best deal on for lunch...

Well I don't need to be a specialist in anything to be bored by the inevitable ending in Luther where the villain and the hero have a lone stand off, having somehow lost the dozens of cops with assault rifles and torches they were previously surrounded by.

I can't watch Silent Witness for the same reason.
Why is that pathologist woman chasing the murderer through the woods on her own?! Why is she even here?! Get back to work you idiot!

Speculating as to how they're going to engineer that farce is as tedious as trying to guess what's going to happen to a lovely couple having a picnic at the beginning of Casualty.

I really barely watch TV at all so if I find it predictable God knows what regular viewers think.

As a biological scientist I have an extensive list, but basically ANYTHING involving DNA is probably wrong- from CSI to Jurassic Park...

A colleague once said that she'd rather find her boyfriend watching porn than CSI as it's closer to reality. Lucky chap.

Oh, and having training in several martial arts means I frequently spot bad technique/inaccuracies in fight scenes.
The number of badly applied Rear Naked Chokes you see is unbelievable- & it's a basic technique.

Some are good though- Bourne, (Daniel Craig) Bond & John Wick spring to mind.

Ooh - sword fights! Once I'd fenced a bit I started to realise just how fucking awful more sword fight choreography is - most times it's patently obvious they're not even trying to hit each other.

Star Wars Ep 1 is the worst for this. The big lightsaber fight is a masterful ballet of waving shiny swords above each other's heads.

I'm in the rock and roll world of insurance, whenever anyones house/business burns down in a soap, they always make a phone call and come back and say "insurance won't pay". On one eastenders episode one of the characters didn't get a claim paid because they accidentally threw a bucket of water over the 'insurance person'. Its not like that at all, people phone, we flip a coin and they either get paid or not : )

If you are reasonably knowledgeable in any field you will be able to find fault in many TV shows.

The fact is however they are made as entertainment not documentaries and you have to suspend your inner nerd if you want to enjoy them.

I'm a big fan of '40's Film Noir and you often see people driving cars with no dashboard (obviously to get a clearer shot of the actors) but I don't let it spoil my enjoyment of a fantastic film.
