I’m not a Vegetarian but have been looking to reduce red meat intake still further. Today I took the family out to lunch by the Sea and had a wonderful Vegetarian burger and chips. It tasted nicer than any meat burger I’ve ever had...

  • I'm not Veggie, but try this.

Fry Garlic and Green Chillies in Olive Oil

    Cook Linguine or Spaghetti.

Stir Chilli and Garlic Infused Oil into Pasta

Add generous amounts of Parmigiano Reggiano (not any old Parmesan), stir into pasta.

This is gorgeous enough like this but you can add:

Lentils that have been cooked with Red Chillies and Celery.

I mean Lentils that still look like little balls when done, not the Mush that Neil from the Young Ones serves up :)

YMMV as I've got an Italian Chef for a Brother in Law. It was as good as anything I'd ever tasted with meat in it.
Dont want to piss on your bonfire but adding Parmigiano Reggiano will make this a non veggie meal.  Parmigiano Reggiano is made using calf rennet.
I thought Veggies could do Dairy Products and it was only Vegans who didn't do them @thumpingrug ?

Excellent timing! @Emp_Fab the single worst thing about going vegetarian or vegan is---quite genuinely---the prejudice to which you will be subjected.
    Fixed that for you.
The prejudice? Oh you poor lambs....wait, no, you poor lamb-shaped tofu pieces.

My wife is vegan so I encounter this a lot but even speaking as someone who still very much enjoys the odd steak now and then the "but, bacon!!!1111" brigade do my tits in just as much hers.
Naah.  It won't affect me at all.  1. We never really eat with anyone else and 2. If we do, they're not immature tossers.

Oh and 3. I'm 54 and if anyone did come out with us and make a crap joke, I'd likely tell them to fuck off elsewhere - an attitude that conveniently results in point 1 !
Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine.
Also chips are "Plant-based" no matter how you cook them.

    I agree with @MattBanshee,

Why do certain people need to belittle others about their dietary choices? If they were being belittled due to their race, sexuality, religion, even nationality then there would some bigotry going on and it would probably be called out.
Why not? Happens on this forum all the time, particularly, and ironically, with regard to music.
Also with everything from coffee to politics; why should diet be any different?

I reckon it's because of the ethics which is often, but not always, associated with some dietary choices.
Some dietary choices are like music -- basically personal taste:
I eat Marmite -- Boo! vs Hooray!  Just like Joe Bonamassa, also Boo vs Hooray.
Those examples will sometimes produce heated debate but people can usually keep a sense of perspective.  And if you go down to the level of say enjoying wine gums or A Flock of Seagulls then no one is really going to give a stuff.
However... when someone does care enough about killing animals... or making an impact on the environment.... it gets beyond Boo vs Hooray and moves over into morality in a way that Marmite, Bonamassa, and wine gums doesn't.
    Something like that I think.

Hi, @Bellycaster ; you are correct that veggies do diary and eggs because these are not "dead animals" and vegans avoid all animal products whatsoever, however its not the milk in the cheese that makes it none veggie its calf rennet.  The rennet, taken from the stomach,  can only come from the slaughter of the calf and therefore cheeses made with animal rennet are not considered to be veggie.   Other veggie parmesans are available, but I cant comment on what these are like as I avoid non-veggie cheese.    When I first became a veggie 35 years ago it was very difficult to find veggie cheese, but nowadays the majority is veggie.  It tends to be these protected region specialist foods that stick to their age old transitional recipes, despite newer techniques being available.

  • I think way too much emphasis on being Vegan these days, it’s a fad unless you are doing the vegetarian thing for saving animals ( but that in itself is self defeating , a debate for a different thread)

Cutting down on red meat is a good thing and eating more greens is also a good thing, but the headset of going vegetarian for my health is not. Giving proper consideration of what you eat and your dietary requirements is the proper way forward. Concerns about animal welfare especially when compounded by the latest internet scare stories and the need to be “right on” will only be relevant in the pub, not to your own longevity.

Exactly. It's a choice, an opinion, a fashion, not a race or a gender.

I am slowly becoming a vegetarian for various reasons and have vegan friends, but I reserve the right to take the piss out of them just as they take the piss out of my taste in music.

Laughing at someone's stupid fucking hat is categorically NOT the same as calling someone a nigger, no matter how proud, evangelical and humourless you are about your headgear.

Why is it anyone else's business why someone chooses to stop eating meat ?  It's as relevant as why someone chooses to drink alcohol or not, or wipe their arse with quilted paper or not....   Who the fuck thinks they have the right to criticise an individual's personal choices ?  More to the point - why would you keep these cretins as friends ?

These days there are a mountain of really good vegetable-based dishes online. The key to changing is really a mental state of mind one. Do it gradually when you find dishes you really like and include them in your regular staple increasing them as you fancy them. Don't beat yourself up if you fancy a bit of steak or a shepherds pie. If you go all denial you will be back to meet in a few months.

I have never understood the look like taste like products like Veggie Bacon or Veggie pulled pork, I went to a Vegan party recently and they gave me some vegan duck canape's WTF and all the Vegan Terrorist were busy telling me how it tastes just like duck. Why even bother.

As said do it for your reasons not what people say you should.

PS don't get me started on Vegans LOL

It isn't, unless they won't shut the fuck up about it, then it's unavoidably EVERYONE'S business.

Put it this way, if I have never had a meal with someone or been in the same room as them while they're eating, then the only way I would know whether they are vegetarian or vegan is because they've told me they are.

You can't impose your opinion on the entire world then tell people it's none of their business if they disagree with it.

I'm not generally a fan of veggie ready meal/ processed stuff but I had a Gregg's vegan sausage roll today and it was very tasty. If a bit disturbingly meaty. And probably not great if eating less meat for health reasons. But tasty.
