Fabfilter Timeless? Anything as good as the El Cap?

I love the El Cap and the endless search to replace it continues.

Anyone tried Timeless? Or any other delay plugin that gets close?

I love the FabFilter plug-ins but Timeless confuses the hell out of me. It does sound good, I just struggle to get it to do what I expect!

Have you tried SoundToys Primal Tap?

  • I haven't, but now I'm intrigued to try it! What's your thoughts, @Stuckfast?

I got Primal Tap around Black Friday, it's good sounding and fairly straightforward to use but is definitely a "character" delay. I think there's a demo. Also it isn't a tape delay.
I often use Guitar Rig set up on an aux send/return with just a delay on it, I imagine other amp sims can be used in the same way.

I can't make comparisons with El Cap.

I have got a few VST delays, including Fab Filter Timeless 2, NI Replika XT, Rob Papen RP-Delay and Valhalla UberMod. Of those, the one I use the most is NI Replika XT, mainly because it seems easier to understand and get good sounds quickly. Valhalla UberMod is also great for some epic modulated delay effects and well worth checking out.

I've recently purchased Soundtoys EchoBoy and my initial impression is that it's excellent, but I need to play with it a bit more.

    It's not a competition.

Agreed Primal Tap isn't a tape delay but it will do lovely dark grungey lo-fi stuff and modulated delays. Line 6 have recently re-released Echo Farm which is an oldie but a goodie and dead simple to use. EchoBoy is another classic. Between those three I don't tend to bother with much else.

If you are obsessive about the hardware side of things you could try Acustica Audio Lemon. It does sound great but again it just isn't intuitive enough to use for me.

I've got an El Cap and Echoboy can cover that sound without any problem, in my opinion.

Echoboy jr currently 45 quid at Plugin Boutique. Tempted by the Nebula delay for only one of your earth pounds - however the Line 6 echo farm is 200!

  • Considering you can get Helix Native with everything else for not a lot more, they are absolutely off their heads if they think I'll stump up 200 of the queen's heads for Echo Farm! Bonkers price.

  • Echoboy obviously. Late Replies by Blue Cat audio.

I'd sit on the cash for a bit and wait for Valhalla's tape delay.

Is that a real thing that's happening then? Any info anywhere?

Yes it's real. Was scheduled for Q4 2018, pushed back to 2019. Check the last few videos of the Valhalla DSP Youtube channel.

I mostly use Echoboy but that is because I've created about 200 presets for it.

I think the best sounding one is Exponential Audio Excalibur though.
Looking forward to seeing what Sean Costello/Valhalla is writing too.

  • You should try:

    Echoboy
    D16 Repeater
    Uhe Colour Copy
    IK Multimedia Tape Echo
    Audiority T7E

    Bye!

  • Thank you all, appreciate the input. I've bought the El Cap again, will see how I go. I can't really get close to my tone with anything else, tbh. Though Replika XT is my favourite of all the ones I've tried (most that have been mentioned on this thread, so thanks for the heads up) :-)
