The strange hobby of Nicko McBrain

When you’re not working with Maiden, what do you do with your life?

... I have another band, The McBrainiacs. Funnily enough, it’s an Iron Maiden tribute band. We do a bit of AC/DC, Purple, Hendrix, but primarily it’s Maiden songs.

He must really like playing Iron Maiden songs!

I was fortunate enough to grab his knob at a Rainbow gig in the 70s (I've still got it in a box).

The rest of the band are Blackmore's Night, I think; the missus is just letting him get it out of his system.

Yeah, and they give him free gigs.

I saw him with Rainbow in the Capital Cinema in Cardiff. I was disappointed because I was sitting upstairs and at the end of the gig when he smashed up his guitar, those of us "upstairs" could clearly see him walking offstage behind his Marshall Stack and removing his real guitar, strapping on an alternative and walking back onstage to smash it up.

I decided he was a dick....courage, convictions etc. I guess if he were on tour then 30 odd real Strats would cost a pretty penny. And the one he smashed up didn't have a truss rod. The neck snapped in half!

Yep, as you say, one a night would add up on a tour.

There was the story of when he accidentally forgot to swap guitars and smashed up his proper one.

I love his playing and the classic Floyd material, but his solo stuff leaves me cold - as far as I'm concerned he is a Floyd tribute ;)

I suppose if he made it a formal thing he could call it "Needs a Floyd".
