Help valuing Celestion Greenbacks from 1971

What's Hot

I have these greenbacks from 1971 that I wish to sell but not really sure what they are worth. As far as I know they are totally original and came out of an old cab. I know some of these go for a lot of money but not sure what these are. Thanks

@Bygone_Tones will know, along with some advice on how to test them properly.

"Take these three items, some WD-40, a vise grip, and a roll of duct tape. Any man worth his salt can fix almost any problem with this stuff alone." - Walt Kowalski

    "Just because I don't care, doesn't mean I don't understand." - Homer Simpson

Those were made Sept 1971 and should have pulsonic cones with 102 003 or 102/3 stamped on them in white.  Normally I would direct you to my website for more info but its down at the moment. T1217 is the commonly found G12H model used in most UK made gear from the 70's - Carlsbro, Laney, Orange etc, but not Marshall.

Value-wise, it has been a while since I sold any speakers, but I would say roughly £40 each lower end (if faulty), £200 each higher end (if mint & perfect), depending on their condition. That is if you actually want to sell them. You will see some ebay sellers asking very optimistic and silly prices but they sit on them for literally years and years, or they will eventually sell by someone making an offer at a more realistic price. The missing label should not affect value too much on that one speaker so don't worry about that.

3 main things affect their value:
    1. originality
    2. condition
    3. quality of tone
To check originality make sure the cones have the stamps I just mentioned and check that everything else looks original with no repairs.

To check quality of tone you will need to play your guitar through each speaker at a decent volume and just listen to how good or bad the speaker sounds.

To check condition - first make sure the spider support (the brown corrugated part under the cone) is not lifting off by brushing your finger tip against it in an upwards motion, all the way around the edge. It needs to be fully glued down all around. Second check for coil rub by moving the cone inwards and outwards with your hands - it should be a silent movement.

I did have a more detailed blog post about speaker testing on my website with videos etc but you might have to wait a few days for that to be back online.

Great! Many thanks for all of that info.

I have just  checked and they do have the pulsonic cones and appear to be in pretty good nick given your checklist. Will probably sell them eventually but will definitely have a play through them first!
