  • ThorpyFX FX The Dane. The boost is stunning for thickening single coils, it’s always on for me. And the drive side is also sublime

Broadcast or a Power Boost/Overdriver clone. Neither is particularly tubescreamer-like, but they're fat and they clean up much nicer than a compressed OD like a tubescreamer or klon. Although a klon (klone) can work pretty well with the guitar's volume, too.

I can hook you up with a large enclosure Thorpy Gunshot if you like. Has two small cosmetic blemishes on that you won’t even notice once it’s on the board.

    Going cheap!

Covers a really wide gain range. Personally I actually prefer the Warthog but I would class that as more of a distortion pedal

I just sold a Fulldrive Fulltone 1 and that did just that and was a lot more versatile than a TS pedal.

If you need minimal gain and just a little push as well as thickening up the sound, an Xotic EP Boost or TC Spark Boost would be good, too.

My Strat just loves the Broadcast. I find tubescreamers a bit thin at home through clean amps (yes, i know they're better through already driving amps) I've had the Hudson Sidecar and Jesse Davey's the Duellist but to me the Broadcast is miles better :)

The Mad Professor Royal Blue cleans up amazingly well from the volume control. It does need/like to be first in the pedal chain, though.

Fattest you can find is a blackstone mosfet, almost as thick as an ODR-1 but cleans up easily and is more 3d.

Have you thought about a fuzz face with the fuzz only a little over halfway? Nice overdrive sounds and cleans up beautifully and sparkly?

Been uploading old tracks I recorded ages ago and hopefully some new noodles here.

You’re going to get an infinite number of suggestions, because all overdrive pedals clean up with the volume knob.

  • @mgaw the comment from @ICBM about all pedals cleaning up is true. Is there something in particular you want when you roll off volume that you are not getting? Do you still want it to sound as thick only less overdrive?

perhaps it's more the issue of not losing the brightness as the volume goes down. I seem to remember that having your amp at high volume helps with cleaning up without losing clarity. But it would be nice to have the same behaviour on an overdrive pedal. So far I've only seen it with a fuzz or with a boost (where the boost fattens the tone and pushes the amp into drive). I have seen it on a jtm45 type pedal (where the gain makes lots of noise as its turned).
TBH I still can't get my head around overdrive. A lot of the drive I hear and play is actually more to do with pick attack, especially on the blues greats and surprisingly with Hendrix too.
I was wondering whether a pedal like Thorpy's Peacekeeper might offer what you're after.
An honourable mention should also go to Hamstead Odyssey. A very very good pedal that has kind of dropped off the radar here.
If you've got the cash, I have a VL effects Jimi Black. Paired with a Marshall it's incredible.
Didn't you have a Veteran mgaw? That should have done the trick. Or is the clipping you're after? If so, the Odyssey would work. BTW, it has the best clean boost ever. I wish that pedal had two switches.

Boost at end of chain to keep things 'thick'. Maybe stack with a drive depending on level of grit desired.

For the purpose of fattening up single coils, the XTS Winford Drive does that nicely as it has a mid boost control. I was selling mine but am now keeping it for that very reason.

Not losing sparkle when you turn down can simply be case of dialling in your tone with your guitar tone control at 50-60% so you can add it back in as you turn the volume down.

Whilst @ICBM is correct that all drive pedals will clean up from the volume knob, there’s definitely a spectrum of how they respond. By far the most responsive I’ve ever used was a Lovepedal Woodrow, which went from screaming tweed deluxe to absolutely not being there at all within a third of a turn of the volume knob. Another great one is the Keeley modded BD-2 (or maybe a normal BD-2...I’ve just never used one of those) Others I’ve had, like Tubescreamers, do clean up but go into sock mode very quickly in the process.

@Lewy that is exactly what I find with a lot of overdrives...whilst it is technically true that they do "clean" up the reality is they dont really and they sound a bit shit, its the rolled off sound with a great fuzz that is wot I need...and there are a few I know will do that, I was really looking for those overdrives that really had that same quality to the same degree,

    re: brightness

The Royal Blue is explicitly designed to retain brightness in the way that a fuzz face or similar does, and it does it in a similar way (impedance, etc).

It's a lovely sounding pedal, too. I got rid of mine because I had something self-built that was similar, and I wanted to redirect the cash to something else, but I was very happy with the pedal itself.

Mad prof royal blue I'd say here is a little clip I did last night with it.  I just can't say how it stacks with other boost or drives.
