eBay team built Relic Tele for £4.5k anyone? Apparently it’s ‘very rare’.

How do you know a relic is in unplayed condition?

    I noticed that too.

Nice, but pretty run of the mill used tele for around 200% price of new one.

I’d take a Team Built over a Masterbuilt any time, but that’s at least twice and probably not far from about three times what it’s worth.

Whilst we are on with ridiculous ebay claims, someone wants to tell Andy Baxter that this guitar didn't leave the Custom Shop as a RELIC for god's sake. Some dreadful sanding on body and hardware gone on here. Only Vince Cunetto and team were doing relic work for the shop back then, and they ALL had an imprint logo on the headstock rear with no decal as such. Dealers should know better..

Genuine question; has anyone *ever* searched the word “rare” when looking for something on eBay? Why would you?

He's selling 82 other items which he's also overvalued by quite some margin. I admire his optimism, there just isn't enough of that in these days of doom and gloom.

Ridiculous price, and also not New (other) like all of his guitars are listed - it’s used.

He does have better taste in guitars than shoes though, I’ll give him that.

What's with this team built thing? Are they tagging in and out when they get exhausted or something? It doesn't take that long for just one person to put some parts together. It's not like they are actually making anything?

Sadly even the masterbuilt are now in reality teambuilt.....its a wonder no one has sued Fender for trades descritpion yet.

    Sadly?

As I said earlier, Team Built is better in my experience. I’ve never played a single Masterbuilt I really liked or thought it was as good as any Team Built I've played.

If you think about it, why would it be? Fenders were designed from the ground up to be mass-produced by factory workers - assembled from machine-made parts - each specialising in one job. Team Built is just that.

'Masterbuilt' is just a marketing concept to pander to the idea that something made by hand by one person is better than something made on a production line. It isn't.

It didn't used to be that way though when you had guys like J.W.Black, John Suhr, Alan Hamel, Fred Stuart, Michael Stevens working solely on the guitars they built in the 90's then there was a perceivable difference in quality, not huge but it was there. As soon as the Fender execs upped the production levels post 1999 and introduced masterbuilders assistants these guys left and set up their own companies. After all if you had any integrity why would you want to have your name on a guitar that was mostly built by another worker? They have one guy spraying ALL the guitars for example....teambuilt & masterbuilt. Always makes me smile when you see people raving on about the finish on their £5k masterbuilt....its the same as on them all and done by Jay Nelson.

I'd value that original Tele at 1700 tops. Ridiculous price.

My Cunetto is JW Black built- embossed stamp.

Also worth noting re Andy's black tele, all relics had an R serial number.

    FTFY!

Also, re the R serial number, there’s a lot of limited edition Relics and other specials that have a serial number starting with CZ and not R.

RE the Andy Baxter guitar: Not back in the pre time machine era  called the Cunetto era from Jan 1995- May 1999. There were a handful of limited editions that had a 'X' of 6 embossed on headstock rear , some of those made for Norms had his NRG serial plates and there were the CC series made for Arbiter and the PD series made for the EU platinum dealers. Other than that the R series was standard issue. ALL had the embossed decal and non had the transfer decal.
Your J.W.Black @Gassage would have been all done with him, he wasn't of the just final assemble era. Have one of his Tele's, its pretty unique feeling. I remember your guitar from the TGP days.
