Boss RV5 versus Boss RV6

What's Hot
I didn't do a video for this one. Because it was so obvious.

Basically:

RV5 - Bright, in your face, aggressive. Sonic Youth-y.
RV6 - Smooth, dark, mellow, and subtle. Even at extreme settings. Very much not Sonic Youth-y. More like... I dunno... whatever dad rock you wanna reference.

I was uninpressed with the RV6. But that's because I don't like dad rock too much. Only when I'm drunk really.

Bye!

You see that's the sort of pedal review I like. Says so much more than eeeeeennnnnnddddddllllllleeeeesssss Youtube videos of dull as fuck blues or psychotically overplayed widdiliness...

Having said that one of my recent tunes was likened to Coldplay or Snow Patrol, so maybe I should get the RV-6...

Nah you want a pair of stacked RV3's for that.

    Two Rv3s make an RV6?

This is where preference is hugely key, I have both pedals and enjoy them for different things.

The rv5 modulated mode may be my favourite reverb sound, so much so that I can't tell you much else about the pedal.
The Rv6 is brighter generally but that's why the tone knob is there, which makes the shimmer useable as well I might add as it's voiced too harshly otherwise.

I use both for acoustic ambient sounds, adding depth and texture, and would be happy with one or the other, however both is better (and still cheaper than buying the so called big brands that can only give you one sound at a time)

Nice comparison.  Sonic Youth are dad rock now though, you must be getting old ;)

Dad rock is now grandad rock.

Dad rock is an attitude, and it is timeless ;)

Blimey, I could never describe my RV6 as 'subtle'.

Maybe mines broken as I can 'wash out' my sound with the best of them ;)

Have you compared it to the RV5??? It's world apart in my view.

    Unfortunately no.

RV6 is the first stand alone Reverb I've tried and bought.

Always had MFX with Reverb or used the ones on my old amps.

Prefer the RV6 to any of those to be honest.

If I see a second hand RV5 I might be tempted to give it a go.

    Cheers

Yeah man give it a go, it's quite a stark contrast!

Quite interested by this thread, as I recently got a great deal on an RV-5, fancying a change from my usual FRV-1.

I was hoping the RV would have a reverse setting but was nevertheless impressed by it nonetheless, Apart from the extra options it gives me over the FRV, I found like it's rather dark tone. The 'Shimmer' (or whatever they call it on the RV-5) is quite nice for some tunes, not too subtle but also not horribly wobbly either.
I've been experimenting with some of the other options apart from the 'Spring' model that I usually use - although it doesn't come close to the FRV-1 for that, I think in the context of the general noise I make, it's not too terrible a shortfall.
