Practice amp?

What's Hot

What do you use at home, say in the living room late at night when you don't have access to your main rig or need to keep things quiet?

Tweed champ perhaps? Or one of those new fangled digital things?

That's my usual.  But thinking about some small, light quiet, but good sounding amplification device might be preferable.

It's all anyone needs for home playing.
Don't be fooled by its simplicity, it's a very capable little amp.

Tweed Champ clone for when I can turn up, and I just got a Helix Stomp for playing through headphones. I absolutely don't like playing an electric unplugged, and 'quiet' in my book means less volume than an acoustic guitar which rules out anything but headphones.

I should probably use mine more... but I'm just not that much of a fan of its sound, on its own.

I can play through my THR5 quieter than an acoustic and still have drive/effects.

As @Sassafras said.  Unplugged electric guitar is another option.

Two kids under 3 and no free time until everyone else is in bed means headphones are required (need to get a decent flat response pair) - so my solution is to use my Katana 100 with the phones/rec out into my Zoom R8 digital multitrack, and then headphones out from the Zoom. Also means that if I hit on something that sounds good, I can just start recording and adding to it, and come back to it the next night. Really useable sound from the Katana and means I can use all my pedals into it too.

EDIT: It also means I don't need to buy anything else to use for home practice - the Katana does home practice, silent practice and band practice/gigging all fine.

  • Yamaha THR10C for ultra quiet/portable

Marshall JTM1C in 0.1w or 1w as required for considerate of neighbours.

Tweed Champ for when feeling that sound and daytime hours. Too loud to play it late in a semi-detached.

I've got a Vox Adio Air, a Blackstar Core 20 and a Boss Katana 50, all are great praccy amps.
We have to be so very careful, what we believe in...

Luckily my amp (Vox AV15) has a headphone socket so with a reasonable quality pair of over the ear headphones I can play without disturbing the family. I understand there are problems with adding a headphone socket to valve amps but don't I don't get why some manufactures don't add them to their small valve amps.

For what its worth, i have a Blackstar HT1 and it sounds great, but i want something that i can wind up a bit when the wife's out and still use at low levels. Now here's the thing.. I DONT WANT a Boss Katana, leaves me cold like a science experiment. I WANT something like a HT5R or a blues jr but guess what? I'm buying a Katana, be nuts not to, it's the best tool for the job and ultimately that's what its all about right?

I disagree Andy, I love the THR for when I have 5 minutes or want to play really quiet.  Its nowhere near as good as my blues jr or my champ though with volume, you can hear the difference the valve makes, I suspect you will find the same with a katana, I understand they sound great for the price and they are great as a practice amp you can gig with - if you are yearning for valve sounds I don't think it will make you happy.

I mostly don't use the many effects in my Katana. I tend not to even both with the presets and just use it in manual mode. It just happens to be a great sounding amp that can do lots of tech stuff. But on its own the clean channel is a fabulous pedal platform.

The effects I do have set as default are the Guv'nor pedal, digital delay and plate reverb. The reverb is always on, and I can kick the Guv'nor and delay in via the footswitch. This week I've really been enjoying the in-built Guv'nor in front of the clean channel as my main sound, over the actual dirt channels.

Do note though you'll have to hook up the amp to a computer via USB at least once to make the Guv'nor one of the three default pedals for any preset or manual mode.

Garageband and headphones for really low levels.
Before that, the small Line6 kidney pod thing (again with phones). Sounded horrible but did a job.
Resigned to the fact that it's not possible to get a proper sound without moving some air, not matter how small the amp.
I reckon money well spent on some half decent headphones.
