I use my main gigging amp and control the volume through a pedal, our electric unplugged if I'm learning something new or just noodling.

For what its worth, i have a Blackstar HT1 and it sounds great, but i want something that i can wind up a bit when the wife's out and still use at low levels. Now here's the thing.. I DONT WANT a Boss Katana, leaves me cold like a science experiment. I WANT something like a HT5R or a blues jr but guess what? I'm buying a Katana, be nuts not to, it's the best tool for the job and ultimately that's what its all about right?
I disagree Andy, I love the THR for when I have 5 minutes or want to play really quiet.  Its nowhere near as good as my blues jr or my champ though with volume, you can hear the difference the valve makes, I suspect you will find the same with a katana, I understand they sound great for the price and they are great as a practice amp you can gig with - if you are yearning for valve sounds I don't think it will make you happy.
I'd always assumed the THR5/10 was a head unit!  =)

I think that if i didn't already have the HT1 then this would be a great option, but the Blackstar is my only amp and I want something i can use to jam with.

Andy if you haven't pressed the button yet I'm not far from you (Lee-on-Solent) and have a THR5, a 70s silver face champ and an old blues jr, if you want to try them next to your HT1 you're welcome to.

I think it might depend what style of music you play, I don't play anything too heavy and I really notice the difference.

I would love a Tweed Champ for this kind of thing although neither cheap nor quiet.

Katana mini would be a sensible option.

That's really kind of you, may well take you up on that.

I very nearly pressed the button when my wife's car failed its mot and apparently the car was more important! The kind of music I play is blues or classic blues inspired rock with a 70s Strat and a Tele and my guess is this is exactly the kind of thing you play and exactly the reason your not into Katanas? =)

Princeton Reverb - it has a very effective volume control! If I do need to use headphones then I plug into the Revival Drive and Torpedo CAB and patch them into my audio interface so thatI can play along with tracks.

thats another option. I have a cheap AI that I run with Audacity but sometimes just plug it into the computer and noodle, with headphones i can sit in the same room as the wife watching TV and not bother her. An AI and some powered monitors will set you back a similar amount to a decent practice amp.

Pretty much that's what I play with a bit of 60s pop and surf.  I've been down the amp rabbit hole many times, on a couple of occasions I reasoned the super champ x 2 is the ultimate amp to have for jams as has effects and is also valve - each time I've played one and been under whelmed.

@keefy I recently sold my 68 princeton.  Its playable at home and sounds great, not possible to play whisper quiet I found, too bassy.

If you want whisper quiet, just play you guitar unplugged!

My wife has been known to complain about the "racket" even when I play unplugged!

For most of the time in the evening I can get away with a tweed Champ with the volume at around 4 and that suits me fine because I like the warm tones when playing quietly.

I get enough plugged in time to not have to worry about getting more, so unplugged is fine. 335 for a smidge extra volume if I must.
I have an old Marshall AVT20 that serves as home practice and rehearsal/Jam carry out. It has a headphone socket if I really need it, but can't remember the last time I used cans at home.

This looks like a good option.

I'm not interested in amp modeling or effects, just a good basic clean tone.

I have a Rift Tweed 5 on order - It has been pre approved by the wife and can be left out in the living room ready to go.

If i was ever able to fund a Rift Tweed i would move the TV and have the amp there so i could sit and stare at it all night! :)
