Can you mask off Wudtone to do Faux bindings as per PRS?

What's Hot
yes is the answer,

these fines lines were done with Wudtone deep colour coats and base coats, on quite open grain oak, so on much denser maple even better.   Wood is this instance only sanded to 180 grit. The fine line masking tape used was 6mm acrylic and once placed on the wood pressed down hard.

Don't have the rag too wet as you work up to the edge on the line etc.

example on Maple to follow.

    Nice.

Is that going to become a giant pedal board?

impressive, I would have expected it to bleed under the tape.

    Nice job

cheers guys , The Wudtone deep colour coats have just enough viscosity so to stop that happening , but I think the trick is to really press the tape down hard,  here is an example done on a Maple cap image

Cool, the sample reminds me a bit of Clapton's Crash guitars. Would be quite a nice design. Was tempted to try this when I did wudtone, but currently too many ideas for new builds.

Hi @guitargeek62 It was made by Adrian Hardman, Vanquish, info about it and more pics etc to follow at http://www.thefretboard.co.uk/discussion/31081/vanquish-guitars-and-wudtone-collaborate-to-create-the-ultimate-rock-guitar#latest  , basically a Vanquish Mystique with ( as thin as I can get it ) Wudtone burst in Mahogany , Saffron and Cherry flamenco on the mahogany, back neck and sides, Dark Onyx on the headstock.

    plus

it will be the first Vanquish to have a Wudtone CP Holy Grail tremolo fitted.

Got the idea after fitting a CP Holy Grail to a PRS  ( read outcomes of that by a PRS fan here  http://www.wudtone.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Tommy-Platt-review.pdf  ,,    )    and thought well if you had a nicely crafted neck joint ( and with some neck angle like a les paul) you might have an amazing rock guitar and with a trem. Won't be long and we will find out. The  body has a nice cherry red mahogany back now ( quite unusual figuring on the mahogany too) .

Hi @TTony  , the headstock has a veneer of flamed maple. Acrylic fine line masking tape has been used on the mahogany to mask it off so only the maple veneer was coated and coloured with some Wudtone Dark Onyx deep colour coat. The pic above is after one coat and I'm happy with that. Once the x gloss top coat goes on it will have a bit more intensity and contrast in the flame etc. Don't really like coloured headstocks so thought it would look cool but not wrong if you know what I mean. The skill is in the masking job and as long as you press the acrylic tape down real hard ( i use some paper over my thumb and run over it) you don't get any bleeding. that in itself opens up lots of funky possibilities .

It now looks different, as the pic above had no finish on the Mahogany , After a days drying the the dark onyx coloured veneer was masked off ( even more tricky with the acrylic tape ) and then Cherry Flamenco deep colour coat has coloured the mahogany to a classic , gibson red ( only taken a 1st deep colour and 2nd base) , so now ready for top coat.

so the mahogany of the headstock ( under the veneer)  is now the same colour as the body, as below ( another tricky masking job to show off the contsruction, maple cap etc. kind regards

  • @andypwudtone if I wanted to achieve a really nice three tone burst akin to a vintage Fender (very dark outside, like this picture:

    http://www.guitaravenue.com/images/photos/fender-strat-burst62.jpg

) how would you set about doing it? It'll be using swamp ash.

My initial thoughts were a mahogany deep colour but mixed very, very darkly - perhaps with some black or another very dark tone, then plain mahogany, then golden rod or saffron. Top it off with some base coats of the same colours and vintage tint gloss finish.

What say you? Nitro would get closer to the exact finish, but I really like working with your products and I do like the unique, grain sunken look of them.

    Cheers! Any help appreciated.

Can anyone recommend a specialist online shop for buying sandpaper and masking tape or is normal DIY stuff from Homebase the same?

What say I, @ThePrettyDamned This is a very classic 60's, Alder sprayed Strat look. Hard to replicate without the same approach being taken.

The yellow red colouration is relatively easy with Goldenrod inner and Carmine Gypsy outside it, Having said that on swamp ash, with translucent wudtone finish and with the natural character of the wood,  it is going to look very different to the guitar pictured. Also to get such solid black colour edges, you could use Black Magic woman but then as you blend the black pigment is going to get into the grain and it won't look the same.  This is why we only suggest using the solid colour kits ( which also contain pigments ) for bursting if you then sand back and are going for a very old wood look such as this ,

    image

So if you want that kind of edge look, I would suggest a solid colour spray product such as nitro is the best way to go about it. You could mist a couple of black nitro coats on top of a Wudtone Goldenrod, Carmine Gypsy blend and keep going with that approach until you were happy you had solid coloured the edges enough. Just don't spray it too thick / especially with the first few coats. kind regards

try an ebay "fine line masking tape" search. Loads of acrylic options will appear and of various widths. kind regards

or @ThePrettyDamned this is what bursting Goldenrod / Mahogany looks like on swamp Ash, if you used Hot Auburn instead ( this between Carmine Gypsy and Mahogany with a more red element) and then nitro some black around the edges you could have something v nice looking etc . As usual, there may be some trial and error involved, at least you know,   no two guitars will ever be the same etc

  • Thanks for your honesty @andypwudtone. Food for thought!

Maybe I'll do a slightly simpler two tone burst. I wonder if there is an alternative three tone I could do - inspired by the classic 60s ones, but with a very different look and approach.

    I'll have a think!

    Another thought dude,

Would it be possible to use Colombian gold, mahogany and saffron? I've seen a mahogany and saffron burst and a Colombian gold and saffron burst (says the gold has been sanded back).

So I'd have gold - mahogany - saffron. This is the gold-saffron burst.

    http://www.wudtone.com/wp-content/gallery/builders-guitars/13.jpg

That looks a bit heavy to me, so I'd have a narrow band of the gold, then a larger band of mahogany to blend with the saffron. That looks like it could make a very cool three tone burst inspired guitar.

Edit: dark tease could be an option, too, for the outer colour.

Failing all of that, I'd do a two tone with mahogany and golden rod or saffron, but I'd much rather the mahogany was darker than redder, if that makes sense.
