Have had it from my 20's in both ears. As per everyone else it's most noticeable in quiet environments or at home aprés gig. Mine also gets a lot worse when I'm poorly - suffer from asthma too & prone to chest infections.

I often listen to music in headphones (at very low level) to drown it out & get some sleep.

Anyone tried the anti-tinnitus 'patches' with successful results? Looks a bit gimmicky to me but you just never know..
    Seemed like a good idea.....

Ive recently got a high pitched ringing in both ears, caused by having adult chicken pox a month or two ago.

I went to see my audiologist who said I had been extremely lucky as it usually perferates both eardrums and causes severe tinnitus.

I'm pretty fucked off about it to be honest as I've always used molded ACS plugs for the last 15 years for gigs, rehearsals and teching work to protect my hearing as it is my absolute lifeblood for business as well as pleasure - as I'm sure it is to a lot of you and I'm investing in IEM's at the moment.

But, so far, I am learning to deal will it. It's worse in absolute silence and if I'm tired so, hopefully, it won't get any worse.

I really do feel for anyone who has it. Especially us musicians.

Pardon ?  Sorry my tintinitis is loud tonight.
Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on mine.

I'm tempted to get some ER10 molded plugs for noisy environments, I can't hear what people are saying in a pub where everybody's talking. Especially with how loud everyone is up here.

Not really, I just noticed I did the same joke several posts up.  It was a pretty pants joke up there, never mind repeated.

@miserneil - that sucks considering you've been safe for so long! :( How can chicken pox rip a hole in your eardrum!? Seriously unlucky :(

Well... I said that yesterday, out of the blue, it felt like my right ear had cotton wool packed in and I lost balance. The rest of the day and through to this morning I hear a high-pitched drone in my right ear (the one that had previous scarring on the eardrum) - I am SO hoping that it goes away. I could have almost cried out of frustration last night - you don't know what you've got until it's gone and if this persists I'll never know complete silence again. Weird thing (or maybe not?) is that if I shove my finger in my ear the ringing persists - but I thought you'd need airflow past the eardrum to hear any sort of noise...?

This REALLY sucks. It can only get worse, too... once there's a hole in your eardrum it can only rip open further. I have no idea how it came on yesterday but it has. I asked a hypothetical question earlier... would you actually stop playing in bands and doing similar activities if you knew it would only get worse? I think I would actually quit all that if that were the case....!

Further to that post.... I assume you don't have to pay to go see an audiologist, right? I can see book an appointment through Boots Hearingcare? I might do this...

You'd think it wouldn't be so tough to help repair a bit of porous tissue in this day and age!!

Seriously, seriously gutted if this persists..... I'd rather live a life with no guitars and sit in a quiet room reading books all day than have this whining in my ear! To make matters worse, the middle finger tendon on my right hand is still aching! My picking hand!! Must be the fingerstyle playing - maybe my weak fingers are no match for heavy acoustic strings. Or maybe it's RSI from using a mouse too much.
    Talk about falling apart!

Don't discount the fact you might just have a blocked ear - see if your GP will syringe it for you.

Anything which blocks the outside world is going to make the ringing seem louder and more prominent.  I got a blocked ear after going swimming a few months ago - the deafness and the ringing drove me bananas - syringing a large plug of gunk from my ear sorted it out instantly.

Some GPs won't do it anymore on the grounds that there is a tiny chance that they will damage your ear and you'll sue them.

Rung boots - not willing to do anything more than a hearing test so I'll give it a day or so and maybe book GP.

It's an absolute bastard of a virus if you get it in adult years. Basically the blisters form on or near the eardrum, I had some in the ear canal which rendered me TOTALLY deaf in my left ear for 10 days which I can honestly say was the most frightening thing I have experienced. The scars from the blisters (I didn't scratch/itch them by the way) are another wonderful consequence.

Regarding the audiologist, I've used a private one here in Worcester who are superb. They have done all my moulds and IEMs and Ear wax removal/syringe is £20 per ear. I'm sure there will be a specialist in your town. I personally prefer to trust the audiologist as apposed to my GP.

Ours our like that, they just advice you go and get some over the counter stuff from Boots and clear it that way.

I get really waxy ears and every year or so it gets blocked up....swimming can be bad as the water makes the wax plug swell up.

Oh MAN... this isn't some sort of joke...
My right tendon was hurting yesterday.
Now it feels like it's travelling up my forearm. The whole thing feels tingly and "tight" - what on Earth is going on here!? I can barely feel my pinky. Hope this isn't the start of some Stephen Hawking's type disease!! Whole right side of my body is shutting down lol!!

I've got almost permanent high pitch whining now, only noticeable when it's quiet but always when it's quiet rather than occasionally like before. Have real trouble hearing any conversation in loud environments.
I've booked an appointment at boots hearing care for this Saturday, gonna get me some ACS pro 15's.
Really wish I'd done this before.

Not enough is done regarding hearing care. Cinemas play films too loudly. Gig volumes are general way too loud. The list goes on.

Regarding my other post, I swear my head feels a bit funny! I think I'm going to have to put off practice tomorrow as this is no good at all - feels like something's wrong.

Sounds like what I had a while back when I had a trapped nerve in my neck. My physio beat the crap out of me for a few weeks to get rid of it.
