How many people don't own or use a tuner?

What's Hot

Went to see a band the other night, two guitarists, not a tuner in sight, both out of tune all night (or as long as I was there anyway).

They're not expensive. So why doesn't every guitar player own and use one?

I've just bought a TU-3 for less than £50 and my old TU-2 (which cost £70 about 10 years ago) is still functional if a bit battered.

add YouTube videos to that they're usually out of tune as well.

When tuners first came out I thought they were for beginners so I never got one for years. Then I tried one and realised how wrong I'd been.
Been using a tuner for the last 5 or 6 years.

Never replaced it after breaking a headstock tuner about 2 years ago. Have really good relative pitch and know a perfect E - have checked against a tuner

I used to use my keyboard, which made sense as I used to record one with the other. I have a small collection of tuners these days, I like my old plugin Korg tuner/ metronome. Mic mode works well too.

There's no excuse for being out of tune in a band. Even if no-one has a tuner you can make sure you're in tune with each other. That said, I'm never without some kind of tuner, even if it's just a cheap clip-on.

Buy a guitar, then a tuner, then an amp. Then more guitars. And amps.

Just make sure you have a tuner.

I do a fair bit of engineering and it makes me sad the number of bands that don't have tuners.
This is not an official response.

I use the tuner on my amp at home, and keep a Korg tuner in my gig bag- my only acoustic is a 12 string. Tuning THAT by ear is beyond my limited abilities. With the advent of phone apps etc, there's really no excuse for NOT having a tuner.

Oddly, I tune the normal strings with a tuner but the octave strings I do by ear. I just find it quicker and easier that way.

I've now got 4. The Sledgehammer Pro is my newest one - works really well even with the low B string on a 5 string Bass. The only thing thing I've noticed is that it can pick sounds from other nearby instruments, so sometimes you need to shield it with one of your hands whilst tuning.

I've got a Korg DT3 which I put in the guitar case, a Boss TU thingy with a needle for outdoor gigs (cant always see a LED) and for alt tunings and a TC mini 6 string tuner on the pedal board. I sometimes custom build a EH bag with a couple of pedals a tuner and an AB box.

I thinking about getting a headstock tuner.

I've had one of these since 1982 and I've only had to change the battery 3 or 4 times.  I've got a Pitchblack pedal too.

I like to tune by ear when I can, but a tuner is essential for silent tuning between or even during songs.

  • I don't bother using a tuner unless I'm restringing but then I have good relative pitch and only play at home. If I were to be playing in public I'd use one a that's one job I can do without with everything else going on. I also do like my B string slightly flat though which tuners don't like - when I hear the major third it never sounds quite right to my ear if it's bang on exact
