You have to wonder don't you, what is Hank playing in this pic? Looks a lighter shade but it could be the camera? Also note the other two Merlins hanging on the wall behind him. That's Andy Manson (Hugh's brother) far left.

Here's another stunner, from the Manson Guitar Works archive. You can see the bridge clearly on this and it has developed slightly with some additional brass on the wooden side piece (+ allen key bolt?). Switches have also changed. Oh and those inlays.......

If I remember the knobs were plain black hatbox, Gibson style when I had it ... but I have a feeling they weren't original either.

I remember that body shape from reviews in very early issues of Guitarist - or maybe it was the gear pages in the back of Sounds. For a while I fantasised about getting one custom built, although it would've been way more than I could afford at the time.

Still looks cool, I like it much more than the current Matt Bellamy Mansons.

Thank you! And yes it is the one that was on eBay recently... Just needed a good clean and restring and is ready to rock!
Got to be the most versatile guitar of the 80's. Definitely built to last. Love the bridge on it too.

versatile is about right. The pickup spacing and switching options are inspired, combined with the Rainbows and that neck....

Wonder if anyone else will come along and join the club?

Would be great to see some more classic Manson's on here for sure.
That left handed Merlin has the same Headstock logo as mine, don't think Hugh used that design for a long time. Must have been during 1980 as mine has that date on the back of the control plate.

Kestrel up for grabs.

Manson offered two Custom / Production guitars when they started out: Merlin and the Kestrel, with the latter being slightly lower spec. This one was refurbished by the Guitar Works and I remember seeing it on their web site a while back, looks like the owner has decided to move it on. Lovely guitar none the less, with paperwork etc...

You kept that one quiet!

I'm not sure it is the one I saw on their site, that one had a metal plate under the control knobs a different bridge.
