Great post thanks @ruoma ;  ...has sent me down memory lane
    35ish years playing various styles

Yamaha 100 w s/s something or other .... had a separate pre amp with the power amp built into the cab . Bought of a mate at school.

    H/H 100ws/s combo.... loud and harsh !

Roland 60w cube bought new from a shop in Rennes .

Manhattan amp head and cab .... was given this while living in France .... horrendous!!

70's silverface vibrolux .... secondhand from the small ads ... lovely

70's Marshall 50 watt PA head.... great amp for guitar and I've still got it !

60'sVox ac30 combo .... this had a slightly oversized cab , it was either once a keyboard model or an ac 50 chassis .

AER 60 compact .... when I went folky.

Cornford Hurricane.... great little amp but not big enough for the band at the time .

Mesa Boogie Mk V Head and 2x12 cab.... Awesome but I got the bug for a Two Rock .

Two Rock K&m Classic Reverb 100w head and 2x12 cab . The best clean platform anyone could own . Absolutely stunning and taught me all about tone. Too much for me to cart around these days! If I could I would have kept it just for the pleasure it gave .

Carr Rambler.... we all know how great these are ... but wasn't quite for me.

Louis Electric Gattone.... I swear this amp has a soul .... There's just something special about it . Weighs a bit so doesn't get gigged much .

Louis Electric Columbia..... Beautiful cleans .... all things blackface...gorgeous and manageable  replacement for the Two Rock.

Lazy J 20 .... latest acquisition and I can't see see it going anywhere for a long time . Does everything I need . I will run the Columbia along side for bigger gigs . Borrowed a lazy j extension cab the other day and that worked well for warming and spreading the sound .

     1: A borrowed Custom Sound Cub 60 Chorus 1987-1988

2: A borrowed (later bought off my brother) 1973 Marshall Artiste 2 x 12 combo 1989-1991. Great pedal platform, but used to pick up taxi radio’s.

     3: A Marshall Jubilee 2553 2 x 12 combo 1991-1995

     4: A secondhand rack system based on a JMP-1/8008 power amp. 1994-1997

    5: Various Marshall JCM2000’s. I had a TSL100/60 ( I owned both, the 100 sounded better, but the 60 had a fantastic FX loop 2001-2011. I briefly owned a DSL100 as well.

6: A Marshall TSL122 combo that kept blowing up 2011

7: A Fender Cyber Deluxe ( awful thing, it used to pick up interference from my neighbours sex toys). 2012-2014

8: Vox AC30 C2: Sounded great with Fender type guitars and utter gash with my PRS. 2014-2015

9: Blackstar Artisan 30: An amazing clean tone and great pedal platform. Beautifully made. But weighs a ton! 2015- 2018

10: Marshall JCM800 2204. A recent acquisition. Not sure if I'm going to keep her yet.

  • I'm coming up on 18 years at Christmas.  I've not had that many amps in that time, at least compared to pedals

    Practice amps
Fender Bullet Reverb 15 - cheap-ish starter combo. Actually probably would've been ok with a better speaker
Crate GX15R - another cheap practice amp. Better than the Fender. I gigged it a couple of times with a Line 6 AM4 amp modeller. It sounded alright micced up.
Fender Mustang 1 (mk1) another step in the right direction re practice amps
Yamaha THR10C - the perfect little practice box. Has convinced me I'd really like a proper blackface Fender.

    Big amps
Peavey Bandit - because every teenager should have a Peavey Bandit
Ashdown Peacemaker 40 - first valve amp. Not that special really, but felt good at the time. Sold it to David Essex's touring guitarist in about 2004
Laney VC15 - I had this for a long time and used it for more gigs, sessions and rehearsals than I could count. It had a Greenback G10 for most of its life and an Eminence Copperhead for a little while. Brilliant little thing and I'd have another in a flash
Fender Blues Jr - modded with new transformer, new tonestack, and possibly some other stuff I've forgotten. Huge improvement over the stock model.
Rivera Clubster 25 - really punchy little box. Half a Deluxe Reverb in a Princeton-sized box with a Marshall-ish drive channel. Highly underrated. Would still have it if it had master volume
Mesa 5:25 Express - the last thing I gigged with. Extremely versatile, even though I basically just used it as a single channel plug & play thing. But had the Mesa "thump" to it that I could never quite dial out
Laney Lionheart L5T - great home/studio amp that convinced me that good speakers are hugely important and that I don't like single ended 5W amps as much as I'd like to.
Bad Cat Cub III 15R - absolutely stellar, super-chimey, amazing master volume. I just wish it had a TMB tonestack instead of the Vox bass/treble/cut thing. Just about avoids the raspy wound-up Vox thing (which is a good thing).

Over a period of 25 years (this month, in fact):

Mine's not very exciting, seeing as I'm not really a roadworn musician like so many others, primarily using at home or band practice.

    1. Little almost tabletop thing which was at most 10w, front was just speaker cloth, sides were curved at each end, and dials were on the top. Distorted the more you increased the volume, but wasn't a valve amp. No idea what it was called! Inherited from uncle on mother's side, gave to uncle on father's side.

    2. Samick 10w amp - nice little combo, actually a decent sized speaker so decent tones from it. Sounded best distorted though. Made do with it for years, including through uni. My Dad currently has it.

    3. Marshall AVT100 - first 'proper' amp, with decent tones and my first foray into fx and pedals. Lasted a good while until I plumped for valves...sold to a colleague.

    4. Fender Hot Rod Deluxe - possibly first or second generation. Wonderful clean tone, couldn't get decent gain tones on it, but used as a pedal platform. Sometimes just the clean tone with the amp's own reverb was enough. Sold to a local chap.

    5. Kustom 10watt - fantastic little amp - absolutely incredible tones for £35. Bought a few years into ownership of the Fender HRD to use when I was living in flats so had to play at low volumes. Genuinely good clean tone and decent with pedals. Sold on Ebay.

    6. Peavey Bandit 112 - one of the more recent ones, bought to replace the Fender HRD as a supposedly lighter and easier amp. Fantastic amp with great tones, especially clean tone, but gain channel stopped working properly and wouldn't distort. Started a band while owning this, and eventually moved back to valves...sold to a chap for his son to use.

    7. Peavey Valveking II 50w - bought as part of Anderton's Epic Deal where they were half price, got serious use in the band, had power tubes replaced. Some serious kit for the money - incredible tube tones and gains, but also really great modern features like power tube 'health' lights, USB and XLR outputs, power soak, tons more. Sold recently.

    8. Boss Katana 100 - bought yesterday, just getting into it properly and setting up effects, and planning to plug it into PC soon to tweak. Fantastic amp which I've used a few times in the local shop to try it out and demo guitars. Genuinely great tones, the next best thing to valves.

And that's it. The only one I own is the Katana now.  I've tended to replace rather than collect, especially these days where space is an issue.

Of the ones I've let go, the ones I wish I still had would be the Peavey Classic VTS (that would be a cool pedal platform) and the real vintage Deluxe Reverb (I needed the money...sigh).

Hmm this should be fun. And a real test of my failing memory. I started playing in 1983. A bedroom player then, primarily the same 35 years later (which makes some of the following amps a bit daft).

No name SS piece of crap
OHM SS combo, bought in 84. It had distortion, which made it cool (new)
Fender SS 35w combo, sold at uni to top up beer fund (new)
Another Fender SS combo - Champion 112 IIRC (new)
Fender Champ 600, which I modded with a Jensen speaker, basketweave cloth and valves (new)
    Roland Cube 40 (new)
    Matamp  Minimat head
    Marshall Lead 12
    Blackstar HT5
    Laney VC 15 combo
    Marshall DSL 20 combo (nasty)
Marshall Silver Jubilee 1x12 Combo (sounded fab as long as someone else was playing it)
Egnater Tweaker head and matching cab (new)
    Cornford Carrera
    Yamaha THR10X (new)
Dr Z Carmen Ghia head (kept for quite a while)
Wangs VT15 head (a hoot for the price)
    Fender Blues Deluxe (new)
    Jet City Custom 22 head
    Marshall Origin 20H (incoming)

    Only the last three remain.

    Bloody hell fire.

Beauty is in the eye of the beer holder

    My trading feedback  - I'm a good egg  ;)

    • Peavey Envoy teal stripe - very good for a solid state amp!
    • Peavey Classic 30 with extension cab, I also remember having a couple of 4X12s at the same time, one was from a Peavey VTM, the other was a crappy old Carlsberg (sic) which ended up having really old Celestions in.
    • Peavey Rockmaster preamp.
    • Mesa Boogie MKIV - really complicated and really heavy!
    • Peavey Triumph 60 - horrible, horrible amp.  Nasty tinny, nasally sound, yuck!
    • Peavey Classic 50 head with 410 cab
    • Roland VGA-5
    • Peavey Duel 212
    • Mesa Boogie Nomad 55
    • Peavey Classic 50 212 combo

    Started playing 2001 - I may miss a couple...

Marshall 10W solid state practice thing.  I'm not sure what it was - the series before the MG series I think.
    Marshall Valvestate 40 combo.
Laney 100W solid state head and a Marshall MG series cab - horrible tone!
Marshall DSL 100W head with the aforementioned cab until I replaced it with a 1959A.
    Marshall DSL 40W combo
Boss GT-PRO into the return of said combo.
    Line 6 DT-25 + POD HD500
    Blackstar HT-5R
    Line 6 Helix (included as I can/would use through a PA/FR rig)
    Fender Blues Deluxe
Victory Sheriff 22 and Peavey 1x12 w/Celestion Greenback

  • First amp in late 70's or early 80's was a Peavey practice amp. I think it was 10W with something like a 8" or 10" speaker. Maybe a Backstage or something?  In early 90's I bought a Marshall ValveState 8040. Apart from some crackling pots and the need to loop the preamp out, power amp in connections I can't fault it. The end.

I'm not doing this right am I?
