  • Hi all I'm Paul. I've returned to playing guitar now I'm retired - after work, kids and mortgages got in the way of playing guitar.  A similar story to a lot of others i guess. Meanwhile, the guitar playing Is improving, albeit slowly. I'll never be as good a player as any of my heroes, but music and guitars (yep I've incurable G.A.S.) give me great pleasure, although I doubt i'll ever be good enough to play in a band or know of one that would want me!
I'm here because I'm looking for a similar old fart, with time on their hands like myself, who's looking to play music for fun, make some (melodic) noise and put together a small repertoire of blues/folk/pop favourites. Of course if there's anyone with 40 years experience who wants to take an "advanced beginner" of 40 years under their wing, i'm your man!

Hi all, I’m Softail and have just introduced myself in the other thread as suggested in the guidance for newbies.

    Why I joined?
Toyed with learning guitar about 40 years ago. Bought a book and Yamaha acoustic. Worked my way through basic cords, but never really gave it the focus or discipline needed. Recently found both my guitars after circa 40 years in a cupboard in my parents house when helping the, move location. The teaching book I used had a picture of a cherry red 335 or 330 style guitar on the front cover. Thought it was a thing of beauty. Plan to buy a semi-acoustic, and use one of the on-line tutorials to do what I should have done as a younger man, and become a competent player. My aim is to simply be able to play and enjoy blues music, ideally in time along with others.

    Specific suggestions or requests?
Any recommendations on what 330 style guitars to buy (not Gibson due to price!) would be appreciated. Will need to sell either one or both my existing guitars to help fund (Yamaha CJ-838S acoustic, or Kawai Performer electric). Any thoughts on what or how to sell would be helpful as well. Lastly, any views on best on-line tutorials to help in my structured learning would be appreciated. I’ve just started with Justin Guitar which I’m finding really good for now.

Many thanks for hosting this forum, and any advice that may be affected.

    Cheers for now

You can do a lot worse than Justin Sandercoe (justinguitar.com). His courses are structured to keep you learning. The rest, as they say, is up to you. Welcome along.

Thanks CeeJay, I’m 2 weeks into Justin’s course and really enjoying the structure and discipline of the lesson regime he’s put in place. The only difficulty I’m having for now is not over practicing as my enthusiasm is very high! Incredible what’s available to support learning these days compared to years ago when I first became interested (with a lack of tutors available in Belfast in the late 70’s onwards, and the lack of funds to pay for lessons even if I could have found a tutor!). My youngest son is 17, and due to watching me practicing via the on-line help, he’s started learning and practicing just as regularly as I. Thanks for your reply and encouragement ✌️

  • Hi guys welcome and happy guitar playing

  • Hi all,

My name is StephenM. I'm from the westcoast (of Canada) and found myself here while searching for a (red) guitar, probably like the one on the cover of Softail's music book. A member here whom I met in my search for a guitar like that suggested I sign-up here to see if maybe a red guitar would show up. He then proceeded to pour unsolicited help and love in my direction. Stellar man that Hugh. Anyway, I've been playing guitar for ages (15+ yeras) but only within the last few have I started to apply myself with any seriousness. And taken lessons, school-y and private. And it all seems to be working. I have found that if nothing else, practice stupid/boring fingering exercises when you aren't feeling like playing (though you know you should) then, the next time you want to play something, you can at minimum move your hands and you might find yourself rockin'! It happens to me, sometimes...

I joined here because some generous-with-their-time person suggested that I do. I've been watching the boards for things being bought and sold. I don't really need anything amp-wise or axe-wise but it's fun to see what's up. I just listed a guitar to sell, which I've had for a few years. It's great but I found something I prefer. And Roland suggested I introduce myself!

I'm going to give justinguitar a whirl, thanks Softail and Ceejay. And Softail, I have a red Ibanez AS73, recommended by my conservatory teacher (named James Brown) and with a good set-up it's a good and cheap thinline. I like it.

    Cheers to all!

  • Hey all,

I used to be a member on the musicradar forums a long time ago. Kind of fell off the wagon with guitar, but have recently reignited the passion.

Mainly here for information and recommendations as I'm very out of the loop with everything now. Trying to rebuild a giggable setup will also be lurking in the classifieds!

I'm also interested in making my own pedals so if there's anyone with knowledge please give me a shout!

I'm here because being 35 I grew up with a lot of forums that were massively helpful, and Facebook seems to have destroyed many of these. No hate against social media, but the forums are dying out, especially in the car scene, so I want to help this one survive!
Plus having access to another place to scour classifieds for gear is never a bad thing!

    • Why you joined and what you want. I joined because I was asked to when I negotiated a purchase on another sight. The seller wanted to use the classifieds here and that was fine with me. I stayed because it’s a great site with good humour and everybody seems pleasant which is rare on the internet
    • Any specific suggestions or requests. No. Great site

  • Not gonna beat around the bush, I joined to help promote my business and get some more exposure in the right marketplace. I'm always on hand to offer any help and advice to people looking to do their own projects too!
I can't really offer any suggestions on improvements just yet

    Cheers

I joined because I'm just getting back into playing again after many years away and recently bought a guitar kit to build in my spare time (plenty of that during the current lockdown (I'm in Scotland btw, so we still have it)).
I wanted to join a forum that was UK-centric to find out about suppliers, materials, etc. that are easily available here, rather than in the States where so many other sites seem to be based. What I'll be looking for is mostly advice about finishing, etc. (at least in the short-term). Longer-term, advice and pointers about modding are likely to be where I'll be concetrating my attentions.
Therefore, I'll probably be spending most of my time in the "Making and Modding" part of the forum but I'm sure that I'll be browsing through other threads too. =)

I just joined 'cos I have been periodically reading posts, and thought it was about time I actually got off my backside and took part.

I cannot admit to being a competent musician by any stretch, nor having built my own guitar - however I just love guitars, noise and the way they tap into the modern world as we know it (sounds really hammy). I read recently that music links to our inner psyche more than any other communication form - it is universal.

So I have spent my entire adult life working with music (I am now 55) whether in retail, being in bands or music publishing (which became my career).

I own an absolute beat up 1978 Precision Bass (genuine relicing from my days on the road - but still sounds and plays incredible) that I bought in 1990, and a recent MIM Jaguar - I just love 'em !!!

Not sure how much I can offer on a technical basis - perhaps some misguided enthusiasm. However I am hoping to gain some mechanical insights into how guitars really treat their owners, and what really gets us excited !

Started learning to play about 7 weeks ago, probably as a result of lock-down fever! Always wanted to be able to play an instrument and I've always loved guitar music.

Bought a Sire R3 acoustic, nice tone from it. Been using Fender Play to learn, GAS kicked in and I wanted to see what a Strat was all about, so just bought myself an entry-level Squier Affinity made in Indonesia. Bought a ruler and a few other tools and will be attempting to set the thing up, as the action seems very high to me, perhaps it's because I've started on an acoustic. Also ordered some Ernie Ball super slinky strings to replace the unknown ones on there now.

I'm looking for a small practice amp now, probably a valve one. I'm pretty handy with a soldering iron and have worked on electronics before, so I'll be poking around underneath the hood soon enough.

Hello, I was goggling how to set up some Midi floor pedals to emulate the Moog Taurus pedals from the late 70s into the 80s. A thread on the forum was suggested and had a solution, so I hope to be able to learn from the poster.
