White Sg Custom or Les Paul/Sg Custom was my dream guitar when I started playing.
But then I actually got to play one and was shocked how awkward the middle pickup was for me.

  • I don't think there's much point in the middle pickup on a Gibson. Not enough tonal difference between it and the one either side. Ritchie Blackmore might say differently about the middle pickup on a Strat but I think it has its uses.

I'm strangely attracted to this one.

It looks great, but I don't understand why they've gone with that particular Bigsby model rather than a B5 which is designed for flat-tops.

And to be honest I think the various Maestro tailpieces look better on SGs than Bigsbys, even that weird sideways thing.

If I was actually buying one I'd rather do without the vibrato/vibrola.

You can do that to any SG - it's the Towner system. A small plate screws to the Bigsby hinge which is then held to the guitar by the strap button. The roller screws in where the tailpiece goes to give an adjustable version of the bar you'd get on a B7. If you ever get bored with it, you can just take it off, put the tailpiece back on and the guitar is back to stock - but why you'd take a Bigsby off a guitar is beyond me.

I always thought SGs are the coolest looking guitars of them all.

    Particularly this one:

What is that?  I'm not crazy about all the details, but I like the body shape and the contouring.

Thanks!  I didn't recognise the system but you've reminded me I'd watched a video of Isaiah Mitchell fitting one to his LP:

  • That Bigsby is the oddest choice. A B5 or B7 would be more suited to an SG, though a B3/6 is a better bigsby because it works without the tension bar. Then they've gone and added one anyway.

Anyway, I'd prefer a stoptail (or wraparound with P90s), but if you must put something wiggly on an SG I'm with the Maestro crowd

  • SGs are mighty cool looking but they just feel like eveything is too much to the left with the bridge so far up the body. just seem awkward players to me.

    To quote Mr Jobs...

I agree they’d feel very different, particularly if you’re used to Les Pauls, but they’re great once you get used to hanging it over your hip rather than in front of you

To get to the volume knobs.

Seriously, I love Bigsby's, but not being an "always on ten" guy I just end up ditching them.

Yeah. They work on Teles and big Gretsches for me, but as much as I love the idea I've found them annoying on Gibson shapes.

Would the bigsby help counter some of the neck dive?

I'm really lucky, I have the ability to apply intelligence and reach past the Bigsby
