    There is nothing wrong with admiring technique!

    But it is important to understand why John McLaughlin was never mentioned, ever, in any episode of the much loved and popular tv show....Name That Tune.

    This in spades.

    The original video sounds like a Gameboy.

    OP video performance is pretty much what Emmett Chapman was doing in the late Sixties, immediately before he invented the Stick touch board instrument. It is also what Stanley Jordan did in the Eighties because - by his own admission - he was too mean to purchase a Stick.

    The plinky plonky sound is improved by the addition of ripping distortion.

  • It's crazy skill, but I prefer other arrangements from a listening perspective.

    This is a nice guitar one.

  • I usually come back to listening to piano though when it comes to this kind of music, I just prefer the sheer power of the instrument.  Guitar is a bit wimpy and restricted compared to a grand piano if we're talking virtuoso classical style stuff.

  • I think Bach works well when played like this.

    Here's a piano intepretation by the great Glenn Gould:

    I appreciate Baroque Music immensely and I am a Bach lover but I don't want to hear it on an electric guitar because it demeans the integrity of the music which was meant for the Clavier /primitive Piano . Amazingly clever guitar player but I also wouldn't go to Wimbledon to watch a bad version of tennis played with Snowshoes.

  • the sex pistols were the rolling stones with ripped t shirts. their presentation may have been bold but their actual sound was fairly traditional rock and blues. post-punk was the revolution.

    I wouldn't necessarily deny that.

    More often than not, '76-'77 had it's roots firmly in R'n'B, etc. Nevertheless, as a catalyst, it was particularly effective.

    In the same way that "Post-Punk" (in it's broadest sense) spawned some stunning music, the second wave (or "UK82" or whatever you want to call it) was also interesting (and exciting - in a more politicised, primitive and perhaps spectacularly egalitarian way).

    @Bucket - you're absolutely right.

    However, I simply can't listen to Mr. Fulara's beepy-boopy-plippy-ploppy-tippy-tappy twiddles. As @StuartMac290 said, it sounds like a f*cking Gameboy.

    Yes, the boy can play, but (to me) it's utterly emotionless and may as well be the soundtrack to a particularly frantic bit of gameplay in The Legend of Zelda.

    But hey, it's a broad church - and that's what's fascinating about the aesthetics of music. :)
