The MGT
Both Tom Cruise and John Travolta are members. They very rarely wear pointy hoods or address each other as Grand Wizard. And just because I may (or may not) be a Knights Templar it doesn't mean I know where the Holy Grail is.
Offset "(Emp) - a little heavy on the hyperbole."
Essentially, just another self-interested fraternity, looking out for one another, rigging local planning permission decisions, imagining themselves to wield far more influence than they actually do.
I used to derive amusement at work, teasing a former colleague about freemasonry. He invariably reacted as if they had punitive powers of retribution over the rest of society. I suspect that the workforce was supposed to believe that he was a member.
Actually, we knew that he was a "member", just not in the freemasonry sense.
Had a boss who was one who'd come back with good jokes to tell after their meetings. He'd coyly say he'd been to his "club".
Anyway haven't you ever had someone look at you and say meaningfully "..and what line are you in?"
