Woodworkers and luthiers, lend me your eyes! (Wood identification fun awaits!)

What's Hot
I got hold of a few chunky old shelves from work but I've no idea what the wood is.  Here are some pictures.  They're pretty heavy - probably about a third heavier than the equivalent size bit of redwood pine I got from B and Q.  Any ideas?  It smells a bit of aniseed when I was sawing it.  It also seems to royally fuck up handplane blades, but that's probably more due to user error!

  • Looks like Oak, which would explain the weight.

Not 100% though wait for Wez or someone to come along, I'm not great with wood idetification.

Could be pitched pine - smells lovely when you are working it, and yes heavy.

    I'm going with pine.

I say that because it looks jam-packed with resin.

Not oak - there are no medulla rays.

I think pine/spruce. Something of that ilk.

    Yeah could be pitch pine.
They use it to make railway sleepers. I've worked with old sleepers in the past and they are a bugger to cut because of the resin content. They do smell amazing when cut though, but aniseed isn't the first thing that comes to mind.
