What games are there where I can kill Germans ?

Specifically, I'm looking for a WWII adventure with custard-thick atmosphere (is that even a phrase ?!) with loads of tension, stealth and sniping, rather than the 'balls-out running around machine-gunning everything in sight' type game.  Preferably with British soldiers rather than yanks.  I used to play 'Hidden & Dangerous' on the PC many years ago and that was pretty close to what I'm looking for.

Kind of a WWII version of Splinter Cell.

Is anyone aware of such a game - or something close ?  Ta !

Edit: Sorry - forgot to mention - it's for my Xbox 360.

I love the tip-toeing around nazi castles and snow-covered military installations, perhaps in occupied Norway or something.  Nice graphics, pretty mountains, and sniping Nazi guards from a church tower etc.  Back in the 80's I had a game on the Atari called 'Midwinter' which was another example of what I'm after.  If they could make a game with all the atmosphere of the film Where Eagles Dare - that would be ossum !

Wolfenstein 3d has nazis & sniping & stuff. It's pretty old now so probably mucho cheap.
Edit : just realised you want it for Xbox. Not sure if that's doable.

Project IGI. Not the sequel. Both favour a subtle approach and sniping, but the first was much better. Not many Germans in it though.

The Call of Duty series (until they went modern) really are the best at this, two being the all time champ (never bettered!) and will run on pretty much anything (can be bought cheap too).

I can see where the confusion comes from the one that's "proper" 3D is Wolfenstein and the one that's 2D sprites in a 3Dish world is Wolfenstein 3D

Not at all I'm afraid - it has to either be complete fantasy (e.g. Half Life) or historically accurate-ish i.e. Soldiers fighting in Europe using guns - with no zombies, aliens or ray-guns.  If you mix the two, you can't really believe in either.

Indeed it's very silly, but quite enjoyable.
