So I guess this isn't an uncommon affliction.

Anyone found a prevention technique (that works!)?

Not sure that standing in front of a cranked Marshall Major would count (rather defeated the object).
I had serious problems with my ears for many years, including internal eczema, blockage, infection and so on. Then I got told about "aural hygiene". I now put drops of olive oil (from the chemist, not Tesco) on a regular basis. I probably overdo it by putting drops in 4 times a week - but I have had no problems since. I put in drops before I go for my morning run, after which I have a shower so I don't smell like a delicatessen or a stable when I go to work. No more pain. Perfect ears. No syringing (self-inflicted or nurse-inflicted).Bliss.

So simple that it seems stupid not to do this if you have any trouble with wax build-up, although I understand that most of the problems are caused by the compression of wax through fiddling about in ears trying to remove it. I've left all that behind.

How  long have you used this regime and how often were you squirted before?

if you mix the oil with some freshly squeezed lemon and some ground pepper and sea salt, you can make a nice dressing for the wax.

I've not shit my pants recently, but I have done a sunflower on two occasions in the past after drinking a lot of ice cold lager round my mate's gaff. I had to walk home with just a t-shirt and a pair of borrowed  skiiddies on.

It was either that or going commando. Still, I guess you'd take the latter option!

Probably every couple of years on average - over a period of 30 years or so. My ears reacted badly to most otc potions (earex etc) and inflamed the eczema so it was very nasty at times. It was, of course, further aggravated every time I flew to go on holiday, and by too much swimming on holicay. I found the perfect ointment / antibiotic (Solfradex) which they then stopped manufacturing as a gel - the liquid is still available but that irritates the eczema. Although it seems crazy, I found that vinegar and lemon juice both helped reduce the itching caused by earex etc - I've never tried adding garlic, salt or pepper but they might work too. But you should never put anything smaller than a stick of celery in your ears although you could plug them with cherry tomatoes to stop the oil running out of the ear canal.

So I've been oiling up for about five or six years. And I've been using the olive oil for about the same length of time. Once I realised how well it worked, I used olive oil more frequently because I am paranoid about forgetting and getting pain again.

And I haven't shit my pants for around 56 years.
