I've sold the Moog Sub 37 because it didn't turn me on.

I'm after mega growly brass sounds. Blade Runner type stuff (obvs). FM type stuff like the DX (so likely a Volca FM). And nice pads.

I don't mind a superb mono or a good poly, ideally one of each. But I'm reluctant to spend stupid on them when Behringer are knocking the little fuckers out for fun for just over a tonne.

They sound great to me, BUT, the worrying bit is the tuning issues with the likes of the Model D.

What say you?

I'm proper tempted by a Keystep, Model D and a Volca FM. Or a Minologue if I knew it could sound big and do sweet pads, but i am yet to hear what I'm after in demos. I dunno. Fuckin synths.

Have a look at Dave Smith.
Most of the Prophet variants will do what you want.

What didn't you like about the Moog Sub37?
    I love mine.

  • You kinda get what you pay for to be honest guv. Good synths are expensive, but it doesn't entirely surprise me that you weren't getting the Bladerunner vibes from the Sub37. I'd look for a good digital synth for that stuff.

    Bye!

@wiresdreamsdisasters what you recommend for digital, Drew?

Blade Runner type sounds = Yamaha CS80 = mightily expensive.  :o

The minimoog can do some good bass sounds.
I’ve got to try a Behringer model D.

have you considered Spectrasonics Omnisphere  as an alternative to traditional synths?

listen to the moog add on pack

I have Spectrasonics Omnisphere, including the Bob Moog Tribute Library sound set.

There are times when my old Creamware Minimax ASB sounds more convincing.

Ive not tried it as yet  -  based on costs and my needs / skills its possibly overkill  - I was just raising awareness of it as alternative - just as you did for me when I was looking for credible apps for Ipad in the NIN Numan Manson vein ...

but the 2.6 demos of SO and its new full integration with older synth models. latest  patches from key synth pioneers , the audio wav file import and manipulation ; innovative sequencer development etc all look like very compelling

What tuning issues are you referring to? I've got a Model D, no issues here. In fact, it drifts less than the 3 Moog Mother 32s I had.

That is great news actually. That was the only thing putting me off. Heard a few stories online about having to get into the guts to get a multimeter on a few caps or something to fix it. Drifts in the upper registers apparently. If that isn't the case, then happy days...I'd love a Model D to be honest!

The BMTL presets have been created in association with famous users of vintage Moog instruments. Presumably, somebody begins from raw sampled waveforms then, tweaks the Omnisphere parameters to recreate the sounds of the artistes’ original instruments. Hopefully, some A/B comparisons are made before each preset is approved.

There is a certain irresistible low end throb to a Moog bass sound that the softsynth does not always possess. Having said that, the Minimax ASB does seem to have it.

    I downloaded v.2.6 yesterday.

It now includes a bunch of D-50 factory preset patches, a few manipulated variations that employ the bit reduction and Granular synthesis parameters plus the benefits of all of the twenty first century D/A conversion, effects editing and no pitch tracking lag.

Eric Persing has been annoyingly good at this sort of thing for almost forty years.
