This combination isn’t the worst for instant Blade Runner :D
Very good sound. The vibrating (asparagus?) fern on the monitor is a nice touch  :)

All silliness of course; more an exercise in tweaking the Deckards for myself than anything else. Got some time to mess around this morning too, so thought I’d go completist and hook the Seaboards up.

@GavRichList I love that, mate! Sounds superb and the Roli is very expressive isn't it.

Say I only had a small midi controller like that or the Keystep...how would I play a bass note whilst playing a lead a few octaves higher? would I just need a 49 key keyboard or do I need 2 small ones or is there a way of doing both with one controller? Sorry, this is all very new!

Loads of people playing the main theme on them on YT, but the Minilogue XD does it a real treat. It's even the first preset!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZ92cHM9o54

And I'm probably going to buy this guys patches, as they are amazing!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4ssUjH-YQA

Only real negative I've found with the XD is 4 note polyphony.

You can do it on the keystep, yes. (I have one). Hold the bass note, then whilst still held hit the Octave up button, then play your higher note. The bass note continues to sustain in the lower register, and the new note(s) will be in the newly selected register.

That's great news mate, thank you :-) I guess the only issue is pitch bends would bend every held note, including the bass note(s). Still, a good start for me, thank you! :-)

The same would be true of any keyboard though, unless you have a Poly AT / MPE specific one (like the Roli) and a synth that supported it

Good point indeed! I hadn't thought of that. Sounds like a winner. I really want a Role though! Haha £££

  • You have a great setup there @GavRichList! I need to check out the digitone too. A Deckards Dream would be a dream synth, tbh.
Beware, the gaping chasm that is synth GAS. Tbh, I don’t touch my guitar these days at all, save for the occasional line or two in studio. Since I sold off the majority of my guitars and pedals to fund synth purchases, I’ve written far more than I ever have, and I get infinitely more pleasure from the sound design etc etc.

    But it all costs.

    I now have:

    - Deckards Dream
    - 2x Roli Seaboard Block
    - Elektron Analog 4 mk2
    - Elektron Digitone
    - Elektron Octatrack mk2
    - Arturia Keystep
    - Oberheim Two Voice Pro
    - Sequential Prophet 6
    - Roland D-50

...and have a Tasty Chips GR-1 on the way.

The message here is be prepared! Don’t just take my word for it; @meltedbuzzbox is creeping up on the outside lane too.

I'm hoping I'm done for now. I'm nowhere near Gavin's level (but dude where is your moog?!?!).

Work has killed my free time to get at it with any real meaning but I do love the sound creation (and the sem filter on my ob6, that thing is immense).

I still lead towards a guitar first approach purely because I am a lot more competent on the guitar and I find midi block tetris a bit tedious at times in my daw.
Saying that it's really brushed up my notation skills and thinking in notes rather than fret positions has its benefits.

Also @GavRichList I think you need to add an argon8 to that list now fella
The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The origin of this nonstandard usage of the term by electric guitarists is attributed to Leo Fender, who also used the term “vibrato” to refer to what is really a tremolo effect.

    ; about £15 I think  - its excellent irrespective of price ..

Brilliant app. Another one I came across is the Fingerlab Mellowsound, a basic toy like interface but its wind sounds are esp good. Both apps really come to life with an external keyboard.

That first sustained sound made the chassis of my Mac Book Pro vibrate in sympathy.  :)

The Arturia CS-80V does not.  :/

    No contest.

I generally struggle with that particular soft synth on the arturia collection. And the oberheim matrix

  • Did some recording yesterday afternoon. Deckards controlled by the Roli Seaboard in MPE mode is an incredible thing; so expressive - almost orchestral.

Other stuff involved here; Prophet 6 for the bassline, Two Voice Pro for the fast arp. Kick drum is Analog 4, and everything else is Octatrack wizardry.

    Intro - Very Vangelis. :)

After the drums enter, I expect to hear lead vocals from either Trent Reznor or the ever-cheerful Mark Hollis.
