  • I liked Casino Royale.
After Skyfall however the MI movies have been far better than their Bond franchise competitors.

I do hope I don't hear a "They did it with Doctor Who" argument .. Hardly the same.

Doctor Who is different. Doctor Who, being sci-fi, can bend all the rules, especially as the Doctor is an alien who regenerates.

I just thought it a shame as the male Doctor was a decent role model for young boys. The BBC had an opportunity to start at least two spin-offs with female leads. Madame Vastra, Jenny Flint, and Strax as the Paternoster Gang, and Ashildr (Maisie Williams) and Leandro who end up travelling together in a Tardis-like time machine. Fans wanted more of both .. either could have made for great TV.

It's also insulting - we need stronger roles for women but rather than dream up a new character/franchise we'll just shoehorn a woman into a role that used to be protrayed by a man. That's just patronising.

They've had a go at one or two female Bond-ish characters - Salt and Atomic Blonde spring to mind, there are probably others I've forgotten for now.

Not sure how well any of those have done.  A female Bond would have a ready-made audience, they'd lose some fans but gain some new ones just on curiosity value.

  • As long as female bond is hot I'll be happy.

Is that how this is supposed to work? ;-)

Did anyone watch the Ian Fleming biography-series?

I had no idea that so much of his writing was inspired by his real life

Bond is mostly escapism for guys to watch, why would copyright holders destroy that on the altar of wokeness?
Changing the recipe could lose all the fans, and attract few new ones
I'm guessing it could end badly if the next film has no male Bond

There are already films and series with kick-ass female leads in various colours, that are great to watch, no one needs to kill off male lead characters to make it "fair".

That's what the Terminator franchise owners thought - research shows people thought the last film was too woke. It bombed at the box office. Bond also attracts women - Craig has been successful at this so it becomes a film you can take your wife or girlfriend to watch.  A couple of Hollywood films with all-female leads (the heist one - I can't remember the name) bombed with women as did the Ghostbusters remake which lost over $125 million.

I agree. But it's not just guys. Up until a few years ago, my wife had never seen a Bond film. Then one Christmas holiday we were finally on our own and Dr No came on the TV. I said I'd change the channel .. she saw Connery as Bond and thought she'd watch 10 minutes. She watched the whole film and thought Connery was a hunk (I'm no Connery). Since then she's seen some of the early films like From Russia with love and Thunderball and enjoyed them. Women do like looking at a hunk on the film screen .. Bond has a lot of female fans who'd be upset with Jane Bond.

So the Bond studio has just effectively said the next Bond will be male .. the black female 00 agent is to show the world that Bond is already diverse and inclusive. She certainly looks the part .. could make a good kick-ass team with Bond.

Ah, but will he be black, white or Asian?  Gay, straight or pansexual?  Woke, or...um, asleep(?).  Who knows where we're headed next.

Could be good, let's have some more names, I like this

Cillian Murphy himself could be good

Quite a few templates in the Bond canon for ratios of posh vs comedy vs tough

I think they should consider Cap'n Poldark, Aidan Turner.

Also Dan Stevens - he doesn't usually do action roles but he was really good in The Guest.

They're both quite young too, 36 or 37, the right sort of age for a new Bond actor if they want to get four of five films out of him.

Ooh, my brain has just gone Yes to Cillian Murphy, maybe a bit too much in the mould of Craig’s rugged good looks with menace Bond but not hard to see him in the role.
Regular readers will know I’m a fan of Tom Ellis. Classic good looks but capable of being quite sinister if need be.

Who cares that the spent cartridges from the weapons aren't there and he seems to have a lot of vintage Astons in the wrong colour.

I always thought this had a Bond theme vibe to it, once it gets going, first minute is a bit slow. Middle section is pure Bond
