  • Looking to gently delve into wheel and pedals,  budget allows for Logitech/Thrustmaster and non seated rig.. shifter not needed but if in a bundle that’s fine.

what I’ve read so far… Logitech ease of use Thrustmaster moddable which I like the sound of.

    PC and Xbox compatible please.

    what say you?

I have a logitech G920 - I've had it about 5 years. I think it will work on both PC and Xbox but I've only ever used it on the Xbox.

As a wheel and pedal set up it works well, but you do need space and a stand to hold the wheel in place.  The force feedback is good, and it makes driving a lot better.  I was getting 3-5 seconds per lap better using the wheel than using the controller

Worth a look at the Thrustmaster website as it shows which models work on both PC & XBox:
https://www.thrustmaster.com/en-ie/universe/racing/  It might help you narrow down what model you’re after.

    What’s your budget?

Mainly for PC but I have a Series X and not a PS5 so makes sense to go PC/Xbox but that narrows choices.

budget wise I don’t want to spend huge, if the T598 is the best option I am happy with that +£50-100 for  basic rig.

    @strumjoughlamps ;

I've been a simracer for roughly 10 years and have went from the low budget right up to the circa £12k rig I drive now.. Current Rig short video

For low budget, if you buy a cheap gear driven, you will lack road feel fidelity.

I would be looking on Ebay for a Fanatec CSW 2.5 bundle, like this LINK

I'd be happy to 3d print you a desk mount for the wheel base or any other bits you'd need, but a wheel stand wouldn't be a bad shout.

Game dependant, I'd be happy to take you round a few laps also.

With the brakes, you want to try get a load cell rather than a potentiometer. Loadcell works on pressure like your car and a potentiometer is based on position.

adding this to that bundle would make your experience far better

Direct drive is 100x better than the Logitech g series or Thrustmaster belt drive.
The csl dd is a good system, I upgraded to that from a g920 and the difference was crazy.
The Logitech is gear driven, so feels quite notchy and it’s only about 2.5nm in force, which isn’t a lot really.
They are decent, but I would always advise going direct drive these days. You can also pick up the moza r3 or r5 quite cheap but I would recommend the Fanatec csl dd - stock it has 5nm but a £30 180w psu from Ali express will unlock 8nm which to be honest will most likely be enough if you feel 5nm isn’t quite there.

Load cell brake pedals are very good but you can make do with a Hall effect one to start with.

  • Well I’m struggling to find a better band for the buck deal than that Fanatec Bundle..

so assuming I’m going for it, I will need a stand.. I assume it needs to be for rail mount unit? Just a rig for wheel and pedals.

Add ons might come but it’s not a super serious thing, wheel and pedals drive automatic is fine.

the best set I’ve had to date was the Logitech Gran Turismo 3 set from way back on PS2…. I’m surely going to notice the difference.

Playseat Challenge is worth a look - basically an Alcantara finished folding deck chair that allows you to mount the wheel and pedals.

I would reluctantly recommend the Fanatec DD ecosystem. Reluctantly because as a company they are a nightmare - buggy software and poor support. They wen't into administration a couple of years back and are now owned by Corsair. That takeover has led to minimal improvement.

Price of entry with DD is low enough now that you should ignore all belt and cog driven wheels.

You can get a desk clamp for the csl if you want to attach it to a desk. It will shake the hell out of your desk though.
Lots of companies these days making wheel stands and full rigs, look at Next level racing, gt omega etc etc.
I started with a playseat challenge, it did the trick long enough for me to figure out if I wanted to keep sim racing. I did, and it’s cost me a bloody fortune haha

  • I’m not after a seat just rig for wheel and pedals…

now I’m concerned about going for the Fanatec

I’ve had 2 csl dd’s, my son has one and I now have a club sport dd+ - no issues with any of them.
I also have friends that have csl dd’s, and they haven’t had any issues either.
The software also works fine.   They’ve been doing this for a long time, in the past I think there were some issues but they have improved things and I had no concerns about choosing fanatec gear.

Personally, id avoid next level, its thin walled flimsy crap. I had their gt rig as my first rig, it was very flexible.

I can send you the plans and the cut list for a 8040 rig I designed. Based on the simlab rig.

Iracing is a great sim, a bit pricy in the first year or 2 as its both subscription and you have to buy both tracks and cars.

Ive done a sfx100 sim platform and built my own simucube 1 20nm wheelbase. Ive most plans and links, happy to share.

Thanks for the info peeps... you will feel very underwhelmed by my choice but I feel it is the correct one for me, just looking for a bit of arcade racing...

Moza R3 PC/Xbox version with the brake pedal performance upgrade (£309 + £26.95) which I feel is a decent price for what I am getting.

just got to decide on rack now... don't want a seat just a rack to securely house the wheel and pedals.

What do you play? been looking at my Steam library and I have Assetto Corsa, Dirt 5, DIrt Rally amongst others. Will most likely get AC Rally...

I also have VR which will be interesting to try with a wheel as oppose to a Xbox Controller, although most of the time I will be sat in front of a 50"tv or a 92" projector screen for those arcade vibes.

Vr is more immersive, I couldn't play flatscreen again.

Ive got those games, but mainly i play iracing.
