I’ve been trying via google drive using an iPhone.  But I’m trying more out of dogged determination to see if I can actually do it by reading some instructions.  I’m dismayed about not being as good with IT as I thought I was.

That's what I did with the cat photo above, admittedly on a PC. I took the link to the photo in Google Drive (making sure it's Shared appropriately), for example:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1fW_OrphpnM2zObyWV4MAB-DnDO_SLLds/view
from where I took the file ID, in BOLD in the link above, and copied it.
I then added the following before it:
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/d/
and the result is : 
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/d/1fW_OrphpnM2zObyWV4MAB-DnDO_SLLds
I then used the Attach File option of the message and pasted the link above.

Easy on a PC, painful on a smartphone, I would imagine.

Exactly what I did in the end.  Googling help didn’t work.  I stood on the shoulders of giants in the end!  Thank you

No, I am afraid not. I do not have the skills, nor the cat, to produce such photos. I looked for copyright-free photos online to download and use for this test, and that one drew my attention.
