Summer cars

Anyone got a 2nd/3rd car as a summer runaround?

I'm seriously tempted by an MX-5 mk3.5
Fairly light, rear wheel drive, folding hard top with not much weight penalty, and cheap enough that if I decide not to keep it more than one summer I won't lose much.

I was looking at some of the BBR tuning packages as well for a laugh, but at £60 per extra bhp it doesn't really make sense on a sub £6k car

Post pics if you've got them too

I was thinking the same...but Porsche Boxster, problem is running cost and need quite a large slush fund to keep it running.

There are a couple of Gen 1 987 Boxsters for sale locally which caught my eye but like you I thought better of the running costs (and you read about IMS bearings and rear main seal leaks which would get very expensive very quickly, particularly as there are only one or two independent Porsche specialists in Northern Ireland)

Well, post-covid there will be certain demand for mobile hairdressers - why not kill two birds with one stone and set up a new business?

Sorry, someone was going to bring it up, it may as well be me.

I always fancied a Triumph Spitfire - I doubt I’ll get one though. The older I get the less arsed about cars I am - also I’m not likely to be ‘on the spanners’ to keep one running.

The IMS bearing is a concern, statistically you are unlikely but it is a risk.

Which means I ended up having my eyes on 987 Gen2 or even the Cayman.  However, you are now at double the original £6k budget.....so back to Mazda or Gen 1.

I still have the first car that I bought for myself ——- Triumph TR6. They seem to be worth a fair bit these days.

I had a M3 Vert up until last autumn. Before I sold I I took a few days off work and drove the though Mid Wales, It was a fantastic car. Handling was great, not too hard a ride and really forgiving. I miss it :-(

I ran a '69 TR6 as a daily drive in the 80s. Bought it as a scrapper and restored it. I sold it for more than the total cost of ownership over the 8 years I had it.

It's still on the road too, third oldest survivor in the UK it seems.

I've had a couple but honestly this is where motorcycles are better.
They take up less room and are MUCH more fun.
    Buy two.

Its the serious injury / death part which is seriously unappealing.

The overwhelming majority of motorcyclists don't die from motorcycling.
It is riskier though- there is no getting away from that.
Worth it, I think, especially if you take it seriously and ride intelligently.

Mine has been sitting in its garage for a while, but I charged the battery yesterday; I didn't go out in it today, but plan to next weekend.

    Mine's a 1972 model. I'm the 3rd owner -- I bought it in 1977.

I used to have a Citroën 2CV for this :). Great fun to drive, easy to maintain. Better performance than you would expect with a few minor tweaks too... or at least it felt like it ;).

Get the Porsche. Sports cars I've owned are Cayman, f25 M5, Aston 4.7 V8 Vanage, 991 and I've driven quite a few super cars. The Cayman is the best drivers car I've ever driven. Boxer will obviously be pretty close to it. Never had a single problem with it in the 18 months I owned it for. IMS is over hyped. You can get it swapped out petentively if you're that concerned. MX5 is likely to have it's own problems too.

Can’t beat a car owned purely for pleasure. Have used mine pretty much every day recently.

True, they usually experience a sudden unexpected overdose of undiluted car and/or gravity.
    That'll do it, every time...

    Agree.
When I was waiting for my Macan S to be built I was loaned a Cayman GTS for about a month.
It was an absolute riot and the most fun I've had on 4 wheels.

If I didn't need to regularly carry guitars, amps and drums about I would have cancelled the Macan order and kept this:

Wife's uncle has a 55 plate Boxster. Incredibly fun to drive but it's now a money pit. Over £1000 for a service, £3000+ for electrical gremlins and gearbox etc etc

Had this as until December, it's my 40th in August so will be looking to replace it with something. Porsche GT3 prices have slipped recently....
