This is an excellent technique for playing a mode against a drone note, but it's not easy, in fact it's near impossible for me on the 1st string:

I have Hristo's book 8 Contrapuntal Etudes For Jazz Guitar and it's very challenging, one of the most technically advanced books I have.  He makes it look so easy when he's playing the etudes.  He is a hell of player!

Nice find, thanks for sharing. I’ll definitely be getting some of his books in the future. 

He reminds me of Pat Metheny/Mike Walker a little. Starting working on his Blue Bossa etude, some lovely voicings, bloody hard though!

Randy Vincent's chord books are good and cheaper.

Randy Vincent's chord books are good and cheaper.

I've had Randy Vincent's 3 note chord book for many, many years, what book of his do you recommend for modern chord voicings, not the usual ii-V-I, Quartal etc that's in nearly every chord book.

Mick Goodrick's Almanacs have been the best chord books I've used so far, but I can always use more voicings.

Bit of thread revival, but I just bought his Pentatonic Voicings book. Took me a while to get the hang of the intention/colour coding (it's simple, I was just being dumb).

The voicings are really interesting, and sound great, although quite a few of them are pretty rough on the left hand, and I have reasonable sized hands and a reasonable left hand stretch. There's a _huge_ amount of material to assimilate if you really wanted to dig in.

The stretches will be ok in a few weeks. It's only the new stretches that will be difficult.

Sadly, that's not true for me. It's not really a practice/work-rate thing.


I have an ulnar nerve problem in my left hand, and large stretches between 4th finger and the rest has caused me problems for years. I can make _big_ stretches, in terms of flexibility, I just can't hold them for long without fatigue and eventually increasingly levels of numbness and pain.

I also have to avoid doing a lot of 3nps or 4nps scale work, too. Little intermittent chunks are fine. Same with big Holdsworthian chords. Little chunks are fine, nothing persistent or sustained.

But, some of the Vitchev voices are nice enough that I'll put some work in to find the ones that work for me.
