MXR 78 Badass opinions

What's Hot
I’m quite interested in one for gritty, biting riffy sounds - early Aerosmith for instance. I love the Super Badass for full-on Marshally lead stuff. Most of my other pedals are fairly smooth sounding so I think there’s room for one with a bit more bite.

Anyone currently using one?

Yup. Can't abide aerosmith though so not much help on that. It's just bog standard distortion though isn't it? Good though, my go-to front end. Guess it depends on your pick ups, I got old Kent Armstrongs.

If it's 'bite' you're after I'd look out for one of these a markbass mini dist. It's like dropping a tray of cutlery.

I had one in a trade very soon after it came out but didn't need distortion at the time. I found it pretty amp-like and very usable actually.

    Yeah it's a mod ds1 I think.

Not very aerosmith which is usually a pushed small amp.

  • LA Sound Design pedalboard guru Dave Philips raved about these pedals as a great 'under the radar' buy for what it's worth..

I think this pedal will become another Bad Monkey pedal. It’s really a very good pedal, it’s just not fashionable. It’s not boutique enough. It does what it’s meant to do very very well.

  • I had one. Shouldn't have sold it but I'd told myself it wasn't good because it only cost me £40 used and I was going through a spendy period.

In truth, I haven't had a distortion I've been really happy with since, maybe other than the Marshall GV-2.
Just so people are aware. I have no idea what any of these words mean.

  • ...so I got one today.

It’s quite fun - unapologetically gritty, biting, tons of output. There are plenty of lead sounds and riffs I think this will work well for, even if I don’t see it being a core pedal. It doesn’t sound like anything else I own so it’ll definitely have its place.
