They were talking about him on Radio 5 on Friday ( top comedy duo movies or something), maybe that prompted people to go looking and moved it to the most viewed stories on BBC news.

Could be.  I remember a few years ago the news item about Tony Hart's death would periodically appear in the top stories on the BBC site, for some inexplicable reason.

And there was that other BBC news favourite, about condoms being too big for Indian men...
