Damn, I missed it.
Never mind, only 2 years until the next one.
Wonder what the time signature is.

That is utterly pointless. Shows that people will follow anything so long as it's on the news.

That was my thoughts as well, “art for arts sake” rather than entertaining or interesting. Same as 4 minutes of silence!

  • Like most of Cage's work it's more a philosophy piece than music. Which is the point, I guess - can it even be considered "music" if no-one can ever listen to the whole thing?

It's interesting as a thought experiment, but I'm not sure I care.

I remember that I was pretty slow at chord changes when I first started out.  The trick is to keep practicing so as to build muscle memory

Anyway, back to working on our cover version of 4' 33".  The problem is that we've got a Scouser in the band and keeping quiet for that length of time is a big ask.

Proves my theory that no matter how bad a piece of music is, someone out there will like it.

I'd like to see the score. Just to see whether it's actually a piece of music or not.
I guess as a composer, you wouldn't have to worry too much about PRS and MCPS.

Here it is, the entire piece, played fast. 4 minutes approx.

  • I do have a score for 4'33", there was quite a lot of direction on it actually if I remember rightly. Quite a few crescendo and decrescendo instructions, accelerando etc

4'33" is probably the single most important piece of music ever written. It makes you think about what can be considered music, and it's something that can't be repeated or improved on without basically copying it.

This one, I'm not so sure about. It's always possible to go slower.

"Take these three items, some WD-40, a vise grip, and a roll of duct tape. Any man worth his salt can fix almost any problem with this stuff alone." - Walt Kowalski

"Only two things are infinite - the universe, and human stupidity. And I'm not sure about the universe." - Albert Einstein

After Reginald Bosanaquet's 'Dance With Me' surely?

So the single most important painting is a blank canvas, the best ever play is an empty stage and the greatest movie is a blank screen?  Not to me it isn’t.

    Would agree.

I just find this kind of thing tiresome. Music is a big deal to me and to have nonsense like this considered great, just belittles the notion that music is something worth making.

Or, on the other hand, it makes you think about what you consider music. Which it clearly has done, and that is its aim

Like most of Cage's work it's more a philosophy piece than music. Which is the point, I guess - can it even be considered "music" if no-one can ever listen to the whole thing?

It's interesting as a thought experiment, but I'm not sure I care.
    I love this stuff.

I'm a huge fan of Cage but I am not surprised by some of the attitudes- not singling you out.
I get why some people don't get it, or appreciate it.

He's a serious composer and this is a serious piece of work.
I sort of think this stuff is about the 'why' of music, rather than the 'how' or the 'what'.
I find it very exciting and thought provoking.

The point you make in bold- art is the frame you put around a thing- any thing.
Beyond that it comes down to taste.

Here is another piece of important music by another composer, Steve Reich.
Listen to it all the way through- it will bend your melon.

Reich's methods heavily impacted dance and electronic music.

  • A customer of mine published a 'song' which was 24.3 seconds of silence.  He then wrote a a massive essay on why the timing was so important.

heres another. two tape loops drifting in and out of sync (I think?)...so the piece takes on new characteristics not only as it evolves, but also depending on where/how you focus your attention. Pretty cool
