GarageBand help

What's Hot
Just finished some mixing and I wanted to use the autotune feature on some vocals. However, I’ve just noticed that I didn’t set the songs key I.e. D minor when starting the project but left it at grarageband’s default setting of C Major.

This is going to screw certain things up now isn’t it if I mess with that ?

Its not a massive problem as the vocals are ok to a degree but just wanted to see what it does etc. If it’ll have a detriment effect on anything else I’ll leave it :)

I don't use Garageband so I don't know if it will screw things up but try this.

    Save your project.
Save it again using "Save As" and give it the same name appended with "test_keychange" or something similar and make the changes on that version and let us know if it screws things up.
You can go back to your original if it does.

This is how you learn things- by experimenting with things you need to figure out.

  • Definitely making a backup copy before you start fiddling is a good idea!

You might need to look at the Transposition Track. I’ve only tried changing the Tempo of a project after recording some tracks, and GB seems to ‘helpfully’ adjust everything as a result. There’s a checkbox on tracks for Follow Pitch and Tempo, but unchecking that seems to have no effect.

Please post if you find the answer!

Conveniently for you, C Major to D Minor is a modal change. (Ionian to Dorian.)

If the auto-Tune plug-in permits, ask it to operate in C Dorian mode. All the right notes, necessarily in the right order. Just beginning on a different degree of the scale.
You say, atom bomb. I say, tin of corned beef.

    That’s a very good point indeed @Funkfingers ;. Thanks
