  • I feel to make a top 10 list a band should have more than a handful of songs I really love, but honestly when I try to think of British bands meeting this criteria I struggle once I get past The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.  Solo artists would be a lot easier.

I'd cheerfully add Slade even if just to try increase the number of people from the West Midlands on there ( ooh, ELO, UB40, The Wonderstuff...).

ELO did cross my mind, and presumably they were pretty successful too - but maybe that success was concentrated around the Out of the Blue period, not so much before and after?

If you want West Midlands you could chuck in Judas Priest too.

Glenn Tipton lives in Romsley so he’s somewhere about three or four miles from my house. Yet to bump into him at the pet store there.

Loads of West Mids bands - Wizzard, Steel Pulse, The Moody Blues ( took their name from a Birmingham brewery), Diamond Head, Magnum, Traffic, Duran Duran, one third of The Goodies - although I suppose lots of areas can claim bands.

Not many famous bands or artists from Swansea.  Bonnie Tyler, Spencer Davis.... and Badfinger.  Badfinger's a pretty good one.

My list would include many of the usual suspects, based on influence, sales and personal preference.

So instead here are 10 honourable mentions that on any other day might sneak into my top 10.

    The Animals
    Fairport Convention
    Squeeze
    Bee Gees
    T Rex
    The Specials
    Carter USM
    Primal Scream
    Pulp
    Manic Street Preachers

Best British bands ever list .. impossible to compile. Is it based on albums or live?

This really is really a 'favourite' band thread.

Interesting there is no Jethro Tull, King Crimson, ELP, Joy Division, Roxy Music, Blur, The Clash, The Cure, The Smiths .. you all have no taste .. :-)

Remember, it's easier to criticise than create!

Overrated by almost anyone with a passing interest in music? Maybe you're just wrong on this one  ;)

    Maybe rephrase it to “10 British bands who’ve had the biggest global impact”.  My own list gets revised to;

    The Beatles
    The Rolling Stones
    Pink Floyd
    Led Zeppelin
    Cream
    Black Sabbath
    Queen
    The Police
    The Who
    Iron Maiden

    I was being sarcastic.

One thing I will say though, is Harrison wrote the best song in my opinion and his Mrs led to Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, so double whammy.

Err, Thin Lizzy - the classic lineup consisted of two Irishmen, an American guitarist and a Scottish guitarist.  They started out as three Irishmen.  At the end of their time, they had members from everywhere but Lizzy cannot ever be called a British Band.  And at their peak, they were top notch...
