So it's hooked me into re-watching the whole thing, again - got near the end of S2 so far - one of the best ever TV series, probably the best ever SciFi one !

The thing is, like all really good sci-fi shows, the "sci-fi" bit is pretty much incidental - it's actually about people more than anything else.

BSG and Firefly are tied for my favourite sci-fi shows ever; very different shows, obviously, but they both have the "people first, setting last" approach in common.

Sad thing about Firefly is that it barely got going before cancellation - the Serenity movie at least showed what could have been

I'm not so sure it is a sad thing. There's a theory which says Firefly is brilliant because it expired prematurely - it went out on its ascendancy and never had the chance to decline with an awkward second/third season - and that meant that they had the opportunity to go scorched-earth in Serenity because they knew they'd never get another shot at it.

That's not to say I wouldn't have loved to see more of those characters, of course.

Honourable mentions to Dollhouse, which got a slightly better shot than Firefly (but not by much), and Dark Matter (which had loads of story possibilities left when it was cancelled). I still can't believe that Killjoys was renewed to the end while Dark Matter was canned.
